Back in June 2004, we had similar conditions, but from forest fires in Alberta iirc.
I took this picture from the main island on the Champlain Bridge (Bates Island I think) one special morning:
What was so special about this morning? It was the transit of Venus in front of the sun. That morning the sun rose with
Venus transiting it, and because of the heavy smoke, haze and low angle you could actually see it safely with the unfiltered naked eye:
That dot lower right is the planet Venus - it's kind of awe-inspiring to think how small a planet the size of the Earth appears against our sun, and it's only about a quarter of the distance to the sun.
I shot that with a 500 mm lens, unfiltered - something one wouldn't normally do. I really should get better scans of these directly from the negatives.
The next transit of
Venus is in June 2012, and will be visible to us in Ottawa as sunset approaches.
