Thanks for these stats.

Ottawa which has 1 million people in the city limits is at 7 I believe.

The metro area is smaller than Stockholm at about 1.5 million people.

The second-biggest city in Ottawa's metro is my own (Gatineau). We have about 285,000 people and 1-2 murders this year.

There have been 2-3 murders in other smaller places in the metro, so overall about 12 for 1.5 million people.

Montréal (2 million people) is at 23 for the year I think.

Montreal is at 15 for the island (2 million people) so far this year. 21 if you include the entire metropolitan area (4.3 million people)
Quebec City is at 1 (800K people)
Quebec (the province) is at 39 (8.5 million people)

Sorry, you're right.

I thought I heard a media report about the 23rd murder in Montreal. That's really weird.

Normally media reports always say "on the territory covered by the SPVM", which is the the city proper police that patrols the whole island - city proper plus some suburban cities. With 2 million people.

Of course you already know. Posting for the info of others.

The new FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2019 has been released:

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s...-the-u.s.-2019

Murders by state:

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s...tables/table-5

And metro areas/cities:

And cities within states:

Statistics Canada still hasn't released official numbers for 2019, surprisingly.

Interesting to compare two of the posts above: US states vs. Canadian provinces.

I always believed that most anywhere in Canada was safer than most anywhere in the U.S. I don't think that anymore and haven't for a while. Though many people still do.

All that being said, the numbers for Canadian provinces are worth looking at, relative to U.S. states.

Note that NS (Nova Scotia) is a huge outlier due to the mass shooting that took place this spring. Normally its homicide rate is very, very low. MB (Manitoba) and SK (Saskatchewan) do tend to be on the high side and their rates are not the result of single mass murder incidents.

^^ IL seems low. does the state murder rate include Chicago? it's not included in the city murder rates (as usual) because of their conveniently non-FBI-compliant reporting.

Without getting into race arguments, Manitoba and Sask feature the urban areas with the highest proportion of Canada's most marginalized people, that being Native Americans. Montana and North Dakota feature little of America's historically marginalized groups.

I believe chicago's numbers are included in that state-wide tally.

For 2018, there were 884 homicides in illinois, and with a population of 12.7 million, that's a rate of 6.9 per 100K.

2019 saw a homicide drop, so 6.6 per 100K seems very plausible.

2020 will of course be a different story as homicides are up nearly 50% YOY so far in Chicago, and chicago has the lion's share of the IL's homicides.

The city of chicago typically has ~60% of the state's homicides, but only ~20% of the state's population.

Sections of Chicago are EXTREMELY violent. the rest of the state, not so much.

^ ok, thanks. i don't understand why the Chicago numbers can be massaged into the FBI's state-wide stats but can't be worked into the city reports.

also, East St. Louis, IL, is EXTREMELY violent (WAY above the national average) with ~96 murders/100,000 people: https://www.bnd.com/news/local/crime...229183394.html. i suspect some of the surrounding communities are relatively high as well.

ya'll do love to forget about the south end of your state.

Correct though as suburbanite said, in the case of MB and SK, there are large urban indigenous populations.

Winnipeg in particular is probably the only major Canadian city where you have a part of the city that has ghetto-style blight and is populated by a minority group socio-economically much worse off than the majority.

ESL is absolutely another pocket of terrible violence in IL, but relative to chicago, it's a tiny little pocket.

ESL might have a homicide rate approaching 100 per 100K, but ESL is only ~25,000 people, so that puts the raw number of annual homicides at around 25.

that's certainly not insignificant, but it's also not a huge needle-mover statewide, like chicago is.

Very true, although I think East St. Louis has sadly had more than 25 murders this year already.

sure, just saying the rest of the state isn't devoid of extreme violence.

so 12 million in IL with ~10 million of that in Chicago metro and ~0.5 million in the metro east leaves ~1.5 million spread throughout the rest of the state. the low-violence areas must be in the middle.

according to the article i linked, ESTL had 458 murders from 2000 to 2018 so ~24/year on average.

Eh, Peoria, Decatur and Danville are not exactly bastions of safety. The Chicago metro by virtue of its size has both the most violent and most peaceful parts of the state.

It’s the North and Northwest sides of Chicago, and the Northern and Western Chicago suburbs where violence is almost unheard of. To put in perspective, you have a stretch of neighborhoods in Chicago with a population larger than the city of St. Louis with almost zero homicides. Meanwhile their counterparts in Englewood have daily gun battles.

This year is similar to 2016 rates

http://www.chicagonow.com/getting-re...omicide-rates/

2020 rates as of July 29
