"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" show was a Radio show of moderate success before it went to TV. Unfortunately, I have vivid memories of listening to it on radio.

While we all enjoyed the illusion of the fairy tale lives of Ozzie, Harriet, David, and Ricky no one ever figured out what Ozzie did for a living, though we knew in real life he once had an orchestra/band with Harriet as its female singer, but that career was never portrayed in the show in the same fashion that Desi Arnaz was portrayed in "I Love Lucy."

Musically speaking Ozzie's orchestra/band was categorized as a "Mickey Mouse" band by the entertainment industry because it never gained a unique style of its own.

I have a few others that I am interested in finding the history of. Will post those later.

This is the Chateau Laurier, built in the French Normandy style in 1929. It may or may not have been named after the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

A couple things I’ve never heard of before, until today:

germanicusfink

Papoo’s Hot Dog Show, a 1950’s era hot dog stand! Looks as though it’s at 4300 Riverside Drive, lol! That would make it in Toluca Lake, I believe, near Warner Bros. studios.

Oh…I just found out a couple other interesting things. The least interesting is that it closed a couple years ago. It is now a "Umami." ?

The most interesting is that it was a location in the original 1956 film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

WHITE FRONT

Charles Phoenix
Dated 1961.

Another one:

http://germanicusfink.wordpress.com/...-ga-ga-googie/

Apparently White Front was a chain, something like a precursor of the big box stores.

The Charles Phoenix site says: White Front started in Watts in 1955. Mr. Blackman was the owner. He drove a white Cadillac. The name refers to the white fronts of refrigerators he sold. He didn’t offer the decorator colors of the day as other dealers did. They had everything. A deli. A snack bar. They had a supermarket too.

I vaguely knew about Papoo's Hot Dog Show and it's appearance in a movie, but I didn't realize it's moment on film
was in the most noirish black and white Sci-Fi movie of all time, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. How cool is that!

I also seem to recall there was another Hot Dog Show on the L.A. side. I could be wrong.*

*I was wrong. The other Hot Dog Show was in Ontario CA 1950.

..but this is the first I've heard of White Front. -quite an interesting post Martin Pal.

I found these two photographs of a rather striking low-slung house in an old file of mine.

no address/no date/no location, except Los Angeles (or vicinity)

old file/probably ebay

old file/ebay?

I'm pretty sure I haven't posted these before. -if I have, my apologizes.

From the Wikipedia entry for White Front:

White Front was a chain of discount stores in Southern California and the western United States from 1959 through the mid-1970s. They were noted for the architecture of their store fronts which was an enormous, sweeping archway with the store name spelled out in individual letters fanned across the top. The chain also ran Topps, a similar discount store with locations in the American Midwest.

History

The name White Front was said to refer to the practice of lining up appliances like washers, dryers and stoves in front of the store, giving it a "White Front." Another feature of each store was that each had a separate key booth located in the parking lot.

The company was founded in 1929 in Los Angeles and opened its first store at 7651 S. Central Ave. Their second store open in October 1957 at 16040 Sherman Way in Van Nuys. In April 1959, the two stores were acquired by Interstate Department Stores, Inc., which expanded the chain to other California locations and broadened its retail mix beyond the original housewares. In September 1960, Interstate also acquired Topps, which at the time had ten stores. For several years, White Front was the leading discount store in the United States.

Bankruptcy

In 1966, Interstate acquired the four-store Washington D.C. toy store chain Children's Supermart, predecessor of Toys "R" Us, which is the only survivor of the company. White Front filed for bankruptcy in 1975 and then went out of business; the locations were changed to Two Guys, another discount chain. Two Guys soon failed as well and the stores became relabeled as FedMart stores, which eventually were purchased by Target. The Target store in San Bernardino, California sported the archway across its facade for many years until a recent remodeling.

The White Front store on California Avenue in Bakersfield, California, was taken over by Zody's. Later it was purchased and remodeled by Mervyns, which also soon went out of business.

A number of independent local pharmacies continue to carry the White Front name in Costa Mesa and elsewhere, having inherited it from their former host stores, but are otherwise unrelated.

Ramon Novarro's brutal murder by two male hustler's on Halloween 1968 is one of the most noirish crimes in Hollywood lore.

The murder was briefly mentioned in only one NLA post more than three years ago.

The El Morera was, believe it or not, an early Greene & Greene design from 1902, before they had fully developed the Craftsman style they were known for. I think that exact picture appears in Randall Makinson's comprehensive book on the Greenes. It was built for Ms. Rose J. Rasey, and also known simply as the Rasey Rooming House. And, definitely long since demolished.

I love this pic of my great Uncle Bert Rovere with his friends, Sheriff Eugene Biscaluez, Ramon Navarro, and an unknown "commish" man. Possibly taken at Bert's Paris Inn.

[QUOTE=CityBoyDoug;6454694]Here is America's most perfect family of the 1950s....the Nelsons. In this picture we see the the family in their Hollywood home... Wait a minute, wait a minute. Is that Howdy Doody they are watching on TV?

NBC TV

That's going too far...even for me.

Let's just hope that David has saved the day, and that is a White Russian he has on the table behind him...not a glass of milk.
