Also a few other mid-city notes:

The old Police Academy near City Park and Bienville has been under renovation for a few months now, and is going to be the new NOFD HQ.

The old Buds Broiler has had people in there the last week or two cleaning things out. They took down a fence that backed up to the railroad tracks. I was told the city told them they had to do it because it interfered with the future plans for the greenway. So, I guess 1) Curren$y isnt doing the burger place anymore? and 2) are plans for the next phase of the greenway connecting it to city park and/or the canal blvd hub about to start up?

Also, does anyone know if Aron Sanchez still owns the old Rehage building at Bienville and City Park? I saw articles from 2019 that he bought it and was going to make a casual dining place, but I dont know how much COVID derailed that.
Yes The Body Shop will be an extension of Treps. This is the plans according to a Nola.com article from last year:

While the forthcoming restaurant is built around a small service station, the property also includes a much larger adjacent warehouse, stretching through the middle of the block.

Mixon said this is slated to become a second phase of the overall Trep’s project, with its own kitchen and room for private events and regular service.

“It will be the indoor version of what we have next door,” he said.

A timeline for this next phase is still in the works.

This application is being submitted for conceptual review by the Vieux Carré Comission Architectural Committee. The roof and all interior courtyards of the Upper Pontalba Building are in scope. The roof will be repaired to align with its historic condition. The courtyards will undergo a proposed renovation as indicated in the drawings, where 3 typical courtyard conditions are shown. The renovation will include reimplementation of the historic, original balcony in the courtyards. The remaining 11 courtyards will undergo similar renovations. Once conceptual approval of the typical courtyard designs is received, the remaining 11 courtyards will be submitted for VCC review at a later date when we submit the drawings to Safety and Permits.

Crazy that the Nick's Bar development is moving forward. I thought that one was a pipe dream for sure.

Probably just part of title work. The city would have hired a surveyor to confirm the property lines for the old railroad ROW, and they found an encroaching fence. It doesn't mean they have funds for construction yet.

I doubt the city has made it this far in the project design but the 2021 Captial Budget actually has the Lafitte Greenway Extension in this year's allocation. It's part of the recent 900 million in bonds. Not sure the project status or schedule though. See page 19 in the link below.

Lime Makes Big Bet on Electric Bikeshare

Will be interesting to see 3, 5 years from now if going with the non-profit Blue Krewe versus giving in to some of Lime’s demands was the right decision.

Probably not. The cities non-profit model may not have as many bells and whistles but should be reliable and not subject to the volatility and whims of ride-share companies funded by venture capital firms.

Tend to agree here, as a essential part of our transit infrastructure its not smart to rely on the whims of companies like that. I think they found a good compromise that will make sure we dont have a repeat of last years situation. This type of model seems to work well in Minneapolis and Memphis

City of New Orleans Begins Removing Abandoned Pay Phone Kiosks
Roadwork NOLA from City of New Orleans · 22 hr ago
The City of New Orleans today announced that Department of Public Works maintenance contractor Hard Rock Construction, LLC, will begin removing abandoned pay phone kiosks this week in the public right-of-way. A total of 77 total pay phone kiosks will be removed in batches of 10 and subsequently available during public auction. The first 10 will be removed from the Central City neighborhood and available during the April 2021 public auction.

Abandoned public pay phones largely became obsolete with widespread use of personal cellular phones; although the phones have been removed, kiosks have remained in the public right-of-way. As part of the approximately $60,000 removal process, the contractor will restore the damaged concrete sidewalk panels on which the majority of the kiosks rest.

“This is a small project in dollars, but substantial in terms of the impact to people’s everyday lives,” said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Ramsey Green. “Removing these outdated kiosks is a big quality-of-life win for residents who live in these neighborhoods. I am grateful to Councilmember Moreno for partnering with the administration to make this important project a reality.”

“This is the result of work begun by a constituent named Michael Burnside who documented countless broken payphones in all different neighborhoods and turned over the information to our office,” said City Council President Helena Moreno. “I’m proud of the collaboration with the City to now remove this antiquated infrastructure. Clearly the City had permitted the payphones at one time, but research showed these are now abandoned by the owner, therefore allowing for the removal. Picking up these disconnected pay phones is just one small way to show respect for our neighborhoods and make progress toward more inviting public spaces.”

A list of the known locations of the abandoned kiosks is available here. Residents who wish to report additional locations of abandoned pay phone kiosks may report them to 311.
