"Anna May Wong was born Wong Liu Tsong in 1905 in Los Angeles, with Cantonese-American family that had lived in America since 1855. However, being American didn't matter in a time when people of Chinese descent were being heavily legislated against.

Beginning in 1909, any people of Chinese descent entering or residing in the US, regardless of the country of their birth, had to carry a Certificate of Identity with them at all times. This was part of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which prohibited all immigration of Chinese laborers, and excluded Chinese from US citizenship. Even at the peak of her fame, Ms. Wong still had to carry papers like the one above to prove she was allowed to be here."

They replaced the span of the ATSF bridge to accommodate for the double track of the Gold Line.

In a photo collection titled "West of Western", there is this nice one of a mid-century,
I'm guessing, apartment complex, with a nice simple sleek design. Where is it, I wonder?
There is no information or caption for it, other than the title, "8337", which is the address
number on the side of the building. The only other clue is that, as the collection of photos
implies, it was taken West of Western Ave., probably in the late 70's or early 80's.

The CDs from 1925 to 1928 list a Community Dental Clinic at either 819 S Figueroa, 821 S Figueroa or both. I'm not sure if it's the one above - I'll have to see if I can spot this building in other photos.

I don't have any answers, but here are some more images from around that time which may help.

This aerial view is dated 1928. I've added the street names. It looks like this was before the Geo T Cline building appeared. It was also a year before the E Clem Wilson building went up. Is that our restaurant on the corner of Detroit Street?

It's a shame we're looking at the back of the large sign in this 1929 shot. The word "Famous" from the White Spot sign is visible, and the "Candies/Ice Cream" sign next door matches the Hall's Chinese Cafe image posted by e_r. The 1930 CD lists a confectionery and ice cream retailer named H L Garrens at 5363 Wilshire Boulevard, but I'm not sure if that's the name on the signs. The "Drive In Market" sign is in the same location as the "ABA BROS" sign in e_r's New Club Royal image, but is a different shape.

I can't see any trace of the White Spot, New Club Royal or Hall's Chinese Cafe in this 1940 image. They would've been on the lower left corner.

I'm pretty sure that the buildings on either side of Detroit Street on the right of the aerial above are still there, but both have been modified. I thought I remembered a post about the one with the pylon, but a quick search didn't find it.

Thanks to a tip from tovangar2, I changed my search terms and found it was the old Kress building. That pylon looks so much more purposeful with a name on it.

After World War I broke out, the troupe traveled to the United States, and remained there for the remainder of their existence; they performed in vaudeville theaters. . . . . . During the 1930s, some of [Leo] Singer's Midgets began appearing in films, such as They Gave Him a Gun (1937), Block-Heads (1938), and The Terror of Tiny Town, a 1938 Western with an all-dwarf cast. Also in 1938, Singer signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to provide 124 proportionately-sized little people to play Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Some of the members of his troupe formed a portion of the group, and he traveled throughout the United States to recruit others.

Singer was a somewhat controversial figure in his day. The actor Billy Curtis once noted that Singer "had a reputation for cheating his midgets." During the filming of The Wizard of Oz, Singer reportedly kept half of his performers' weekly pay. Nevertheless, his troupe members often spoke positively of him. Nita Krebs said that he "always treated his people fine," and Grace Williams said, "He had private tutors to give them an education. He treated them fine and gave them beautiful hotel suites." Fern Formica recalled, "He was like a father. He was a good man." A number of Singer's Midgets affectionately referred to their manager as "Papa."
