socialist NDP School Board

It means 75% of the School Trustees get elected in Hamilton because they send out campaign material with themselves posing in photos with David Christopherson, Horwath, McHattie and a union leader of some sort, telling the stupid voters of Hamilton to vote for me because I'm NDP> and we'll move HO from downtown to the suburbs and close schools in the lower city.

Prove that there is even one New Democrat on the school board. You have said the same thing about council in the past when there is only 1 on council.

NDP rivals trade blows early in trustee race
(Stoney Creek News, Sept 8, 2010)

Two NDP-affiliated candidates are going for the political jugular early as they square off in the race for Ward 5 public school trustee.

Challenger Todd White, assistant to Hamilton East-Stoney Creek NDP MPP Paul Miller and president of the provincial riding association, says he’s running because incumbent Ron English has been playing “hide-and-seek” with constituents.

English, former president of the area’s federal and provincial NDP riding associations, not only “totally” disagrees, but suggests White only moved to Stoney Creek from London, Ont. this year to run for trustee and has further ambitions for higher office....

Dundas trustee Jessica Brennan, the board’s chair, has run for the party federally and provincially, while Stoney Creek trustee Bob Barlow has vied provincially. Ward 3 trustee Tim Simmons is president of the Hamilton East-Stoney Creek federal riding association.

Newcomer Alex Johnstone, 27, NDP candidate for the next federal election in Ancaster- Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, is also running for trustee in wards 11 and 12.

SCN's managing editor later ran provincially as a Liberal in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.

I totally agree with this. I can't understand why these trustees would vote for moving the headquarters from the downtown (I'm looking at you Tim Simmons, Alex Johnston and Judith Bishop). Seems it would go against NDP principles but there you go. And now Simmons is basically shepherding the destruction of Sanford School in his own ward. I guess that's what you get when you elect the Wedding Chapel guy as your trustee.

This is definitely happening. They've started putting up walls for the basement (or maybe underground parking?).

Council doesn't run under political parties

In my opinion it fair to say the following are NDP
McHattie
Farr
Merulla
Powers
Johnson
Duvall

Left leaning liberals
Patsuda
Partridge

moderates
Whitehead
Bratina
Morelli
Jackson
Collins
Pearson

conservative
Ferguson
Clark

I think I'm pretty close

So that we're not colouring this thread, anyone want to reinvent this sidebar as a generic "City Politics" thread in the Business, Politics & the Economy forum?

So there's 3 actually on the board. That means the rest aren't.

Mchattie was being courted by the Conservatives a couple of years ago. He is considered a fiscal conservative.
Farr is a liberal.
Duvall is a liberal.
Powers either ran for the liberals or sought the liberal nomination at one point.

Either way it doesn't matter, city's that have traditionally had NDP leaning councils have done much better that this city has with Liberal/Conservative leaning councils. Toronto and Ottawa would be good examples of city's that have flourished under NDP led councils. You could also add Vancouver to that list.

party ideologies mean nothing in municipal politics. None of the parties care about urban issues. Ask 100 Canadians what their priorities are and urban or planning issues would probably come 10th on the list. The NDP is one of the worst - good planning will subordinate to union issues every time.

This article about the James Street Baptist Church goes on to talk about a potential project at an old bank at Barton and Westinghouse. Owned by Drew Hauser of MSA, he says that 'Everyone's telling me I'm crazy, but I've got these young entrepreneurs who want to open an indie coffee shop to attract local customers and artists.'

Could it be that it's already happening? Are trendy shops and cafes going to start popping up on Barton? Some people have been waiting 25 years for this day and it appears that we may be on the verge. Fingers crossed.

This is the bank being referred to:

It might function to improve insolation and would probably be cheaper than putting in new windows.

I sure hope this happens... I would go there and have coffee in a heartbeat.
It's what is lacking in that area.

Barton could become the NEW Queen West!

I have a neighbour who does this. Let's knock on his door and ask!

This season I used a window film on a couple of windows, with great success in keeping out drafts.

shift workers

Tinfoil is to block out the light. This is a Hamilton thing with lots of shiftworkers that sleep during the day. I like it because it says Hammer to me.

Lovely building. Have to say that when I discovered Flar's spectacular photo essay on Hamilton I was hooked and knew we had to move here.

Not to derail the thread, but I'm a fairly obsessed coffee guy. I roast my own at home. Haven't done much lately as it's too cold outside (I'm not allowed to roast indoors ). I will crank it up again, weather-permitting. Needs to be above about 5 degrees c. My roasts are done in small batches. If anyone wants to try some, let me know with a PM.

Plus it blocks out the sun. But why just one window? I dunno, must be a broken window.
