Farewell to DC

After living in DC for more than twenty years (minus a couple of years during the pandemic), I will be moving to New York in May for a new job. I have been doing a lot of walk-abouts recently to take in all of the neighborhoods before I move. Here are some recent photos.

The snow we got in January was the most snow we received in about five years. It even stayed on the ground for a couple of days.

"Frederick Douglass is being recognized more and more."

"The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day:
The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, "If only Casey could but get a whack at that—
We'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat."

We've had some stunning sunrises and sunsets this past winter and spring.

Vamos United!

This former art deco theater with the marquee on 11th Street, SE, is an absolute gem.

As someone who did exactly this relocation over 28 years ago - ie moved up from the DC area (Rockville, MD) up here to NYC….I can relate. I was born in DC proper and lived my youth in the DC Metro area and still have family and some friends down there and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Now that you’re coming up to the NYC area….getting ready for living life in hyper overdrive mode. Welcome to the area

very nice sayonara —

and speaking of japan, we bloom later up here, so you’re just in time to catch another wave of cherry blossom hanami at brooklyn botanic garden and newark branch brook park (and if you want the deep dive quite a few striking residential street blooms here in staten).

Aw, enjoy NY. A bittersweet move for sure. DC will miss you.

Nice photos. I've recently been appreciating how 11th Street is quietely a really interesting street.
