The airport is nice, but it seems like BER will be the equivalent of PHX: a huge airport that really only serves the domestic market (or, in this case, Europe).

It's hard to believe that Berlin, and surrounding Eastern Germany, couldn't support a nonstop flight to places like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Chicago, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Atlanta, etc. Is Berlin not as worldly as we think it is?

Bangkok (Air Berlin)
Beijing (Hainan Airlines)
Beirut (Lufthansa)
Cairo (Egyptair)
Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc)
Damascua (Syrian Air)
Doha (Qatar Airways)
Dubai (Air Berlin)
Los Angeles (Air Berlin)
Mombasa (Air Berlin)
Newark (United Airlines)
New York-JFK (Air Berlin, Delta Airlines)
Tel Aviv (El Al, Israir, Lufthansa)
Tunis (Tunisair)
Ulaanbaatar (MIAT Mongolian Airlines)

And as a future Oneworld Hub, chances are that it will get new connections such as Chicago & Dallas (American Airlines), Tokyo (Japan Airlines) and Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific) in the near future.

Well the problem is that there is no real need for another Hub in Germany. Lufthansa has Frankfurt as its primary hub and Munich as secondary, Air Berlin has Düsseldorf as its main hub, but i think they announced to make Berlin their secondary hub, which is not bringing that much international connections though. Still, Berlin, in theory, could be serving as Germany´s north-east hub and should also be interesting for travelers to and from Poland, which is quite close... so lets see....

This airport looks like it will be awesome. It's great that it will have direct rail connections, too. Thanks for posting this thread, Lear.

@Alchemist Redux: I would assume it's not because Berlin isn't an important city, because it is probably Germany's most important city, but rather because Frankfurt takes the cake for Germany's airport. If you are from Chicago and traveling to Berlin, you go to Frankfurt (or perhaps Amsterdam) and connect flights or take the ICE or other rail transport.

Germany and Italy are decentralised - the capitals are not the economic centres. Contrast with the UK and France - Paris and London dominate politically as well as economically.

if Air Berlin started flying to Singapore they'd get a massive feed from Qantas to all the big 5 mainland Australia state capitals + Darwin and Cairns on Jetstar.

Berlin is the political center of Germany, but it trails Frankfurt, Munich, the Rhine-Ruhr Area and Hamburg as a center of business and commerce. Also, Berlin has a peripheral location within Germany. Being located within the most sparsely populated part of Germany, its domestic market simply isn't that big.

Don´t worry, Berlin is one of the most visited cities on the globe, there is a lot of incoming traffic.

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport is getting a green Plaza ....

First passenger activities are simulated ....(including a glimpse on wooden check in terminals)
