I guess i know how to pick a neighborhood. Both Cobble Hill and Astoria only had one murder in 2008.

Wow what a drop! 1990 looks so dangerous. And look at that Upper Manhattan. From 103 to 3!

I lived in Manhattan 1991-1992. It was fine. We were out until the bars closed at 4 am. No problems. Didn't feel uncomfortable. But this was the Upper West Side (96th St.) not Washington Heights.

Yes, NYC is much safer. Would like to see numbers from the late 70's and/or early 80's as compared to now. Also, wonder if the crime reporting in 1990 is the same as in 2009. Can't recall any specific changes, but, the way crimes are reported or catagorized can make this type of comparisons tricky.

That's incredible. The difference is just totally unimaginable, I'm just at a loss for words. A round of applause for NYC! It is a model of contemporary American urban society.

1990 wasn't even the peak of crime, was it?

Crime? No. Crime peaked in the early 1980's.

Murders? Yes.

1990 was a record year for murders, though the numbers are arguably inflated a bit by the infamous Happyland Club fire (the Honduran dance hall that a jealous lover burnt to the ground) and a few other extremely unusual occurances.

Still an amazing turnaround.
