Kawartha’s definitely central. The other two may be up for debate.

Ps: Funny enough, when I drove on the 401 in March 2021, the weather was springlike in Cobourg - there was little to no trace of snow. Then, when I passed by Brighton, Lo and behold, it was snow everywhere (except on the 401, of couse).

Northumberland is a no man's land. Cobourg, for instance, is a 905 area code (Golden Horseshoe), area code is K (Eastern Ontario). I don't listen to the radio anymore but the local rock station used to brand itself as "Central Ontario's Best Rock". I noticed the Wikipedia entry for Northumberland has it as Central Ontario. Cobourg often receives funding from the 'Eastern Ontario Development Fund'. These examples could go on.

I'd say the Eastern portion of the county (starting around Colborne, definitely Brighton) considers itself to be Eastern Ontario. 613 Area Code starts in Brighton. Cobourg and Port Hope don't know what they are. A lot more ties to the GTA starting at Cobourg.

I always felt like I was in Eastern Ontario on the 401 once I was clear of Oshawa.

I don't think Central Ontario really exists, at least not anymore. Places like Guelph, Barrie, Orangeville, and even KW where often lapped into this category but now they are basically nothing more than the Golden Horseshoe and completely Toronto focused.

I have never heard any one talk about Central Ontario. For 99% of the population, east of Oshawa is Eastern, west of KW is Western, north of Midland is Northern, and every thing else is just a Toronto suburb in the making.

I use the 905 area code. And that includes Port Hope and Coburg. For me, Eastern Ontario is closer to Trenton and East from there. Big Apple marks the end of the GTA.

I heard the term "Central Ontario" used several times over the last few days in media reports about the tornado touchdowns in Barrie and nearby areas.

Time to stir the pot:
Is the Village of Caledon part of GTA and/or part of Central Ontario?

GTA. It's in the commuter orbit. Same with, like, Orangeville.

I don't actually think Central Ontario is really a thing. Peterborough is basically Eastern Ontario, Barrie is cottage country, and Guelph and beyond is Southwest or South.

The geography thread disappeared.
Does anyone know how high Lions’ Lookout in Huntsville is? Surprisingly a quick Google search doesn’t return anything useful.

Central Ontario. A myth. A legend. A non-place of existence on another plane.

From the north, all is south past Parry Sound. From the south, all is north past Highway 7. From the east and west, Oshawa and Milton delineate the ever expanding radius of the GTA. Ottawa, living on the border of the Two Solitudes? Thunder Bay is right out; an area on the map scrawled with 'Thar be dragons' and question marks.

A centre, you say? A fulcrum on which this great province rests? A place that is neither north or south, nor east or west? That isn't the city nor the hinterlands? One Ontarian region to rule them all?

Madness, I say.

Perhaps Central Ontario is just a state of mind
Or hive-mind
