FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015

Now that the 2011 Canada Winter Games are over, looks like we can look forward to hosting the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Thought we should make a new thread so discussion doesn't get lost in the the Stadium thread.

Halifax one step closer to hosting 2015 Women's World Cup

Zimbabwe withdraws bid, leaving Canada as only candidate

By The Canadian Press

ZURICH, Switzerland — Zimbabwe withdrew its bid to host the Women's World Cup in 2015 leaving Canada as the only candidate, FIFA said on Tuesday.

Canada's bid must be evaluated and approved by the FIFA executive meeting when it meets on Wednesday and Thursday. Halifax has been cited as a host city.

Canadian sports minister Gary Lunn met with FIFA President Sepp Blatter on Monday to promote his country's bid.

``We support Canada's bid for Women's World Cup in 2015,'' Lunn said in a statement on FIFA's website. ``The Canadian Soccer Association has put in considerable work and has the total support of the government.''

If successful, Canada also would stage the Women's Under-20 World Cup in 2014 as a test event.

Canada previously hosted the men's U20 World Cup in 2007. Its women's team also has qualified for the 16-team 2011 World Cup kicking off on June 26 in Germany.

Zimbabwe officials acknowledged last month that their infrastructure was ``the barest minimum'' to stage the tournament, but hoped FIFA would show the same faith it had in South Africa to organize a successful men's World Cup last year.

FIFA's ruling executive panel will decide the hosts of five other age-group tournaments this week.

Ghana and United Arab Emirates are competing to host the men's U17 World Cup in 2013.

The UAE also has bid for the U20 event in 2013, against Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Turkey and Uzbekistan also seek hosting rights for the women's U17s in 2014 with Costa Rica and Ghana.

Wales is bidding for both tournaments in 2015: Against Chile for the U17 finals, and against New Zealand for the U20s.

Halifax awaits FIFA news

Halifax on list as possible host for 2015 event, but needs stadium

CBC News Posted: Mar 1, 2011 1:28 PM AT Last Updated: Mar 1, 2011 1:28 PM AT

Zimbabwe has pulled out of the race to host the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, leaving Canada as the only candidate.

FIFA will make an official announcement about the host country on Thursday.

Canada must have a minimum of six host cities. For now, Halifax is a candidate, but it needs a larger stadium to stay on the list.

Coun. Darren Fisher, who supports a new stadium, says a feasibility report will be ready by June for council to consider.

A final decision on the Canadian cities could take up to a year.

The winning bid for the 2015 tournament also earns the right to host the Under-20 Women's World Cup in 2014.

This is good news as there is a possibility that all cities will be chosen to Host.

Canada gets 2015 Women's World Cup of soccer

FIFA rubber-stamped Canadian bid on Thursday

It's official: The best women's soccer players in the world are coming to Canada.

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, on Thursday officially named Canada as the host nation of the 2015 Women's World Cup, rubber-stamping its bid after Zimbabwe pulled out of the running earlier in the week.

Zimbabwe was Canada's lone opposition, so when it withdrew from the race, Canada was virtually assured of staging the competition — all that was left to do was for FIFA was to formally evaluate and approve Canada's bid.

As a result of Thursday's proclamation, Canada will also stage the Women's Under-20 World Cup in 2014.

Canada previously hosted the inaugural women's Under-20 World Cup in 2002, as well as the men's Under-17 World Cup (in 1987) and the men's Under-20 World Cup (in 2007).

The Canadian government has already committed up to $15 million in funding to the Canadian Soccer Association to run the 2015 tournament.

Seven cities were involved in Canada's bid for the 2015 World Cup: Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Moncton, N.B., and Halifax. Six cities host games at the tournament, so one city will have to be eliminated from the mix.

Toronto was not part of the bid because it will host the 2015 Pan American Games.

Thursday's announcement was the latest good news to befall Canadian soccer.

Last week, the men's Under-17 team reached the final of the CONCACAF championship, earning a spot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico this summer. It marked the first time the Canadians qualified for the World Cup in 16 years.

Members of the women's senior team also recently lifted their boycott in support of embattled coach Carolina Morace, defeating Italy 1-0 in their opening game of the Cyprus Cup. The women are using the tournament as preparation for this year's World Cup, which runs from June 26 to July 17 in Germany. Canada plays the Germans on the first day of the tournament.

Playing host to Women's World Cup would be a ‘coup’ for city, Watson says

Playing host to Women's World Cup would be a ‘coup’ for city, Watson says. An artist's conception of a redeveloped Frank Clair Stadium at Lansdowne Park. The stadium would play host to both the 2014 Women's U20 World Cup and 2015 Women's World Cup if Ottawa is selected as a host city

http://www.yourottawaregion.com/spor...ty-watson-says

The last time Ottawa hosted a FIFA event, the 2007 men’s U20 World Cup, eight of the tournament’s 52 matches were played at Lansdowne Park. The average attendance for those eight games was 25,128.
Quote:
“I think the other thing that event did was (with) the size of the crowds, the atmosphere at the games and the quality of the play (it) turned a lot of spectators into soccer fans. So I expect to see similar things if we’re able to attract the Women’s World Cup to Ottawa.”
This is encouraging news. Hopefully Halifax will have a nice stadium full of 25,000 spectators for this event too.

City working toward 2015 Women’s World Cup

Now that Canada has been awarded the 2015 Women’s World Cup of Soccer, many people are hard at work to ensure that the Canadian Soccer Association picks HRM as one of the six official host centres for the 10-day tournament.
We have a proven track record for staging major sporting events – witness our success with the 2011 Canada Games – however, what we still need is a venue large enough for something of such magnitude.
A council-sanctioned consultation and business planning analysis is underway to examine the long-term benefits to HRM of a stadium as well as all costs involved. We have also named a strong, citizen-led steering committee to consider the business case for a stadium.
There will also be representation from government and community organizations and three members of council – the mayor and councillors Dawn Sloane (Halifax Downtown) and Darren Fisher (East Dartmouth-The Lakes).
In 2007, Canada hosted the Under-20 World Cup of Soccer which generated $260 million in economic activity and attracted almost 1.2 million spectators. It was the largest single sports event in Canadian history.

Soccer bid still kicking

But council has ‘off-ramp’ option in December for stadium and FIFA hosting bid

The FIFA Women’s World Cup bid lives on in Halifax.

Last night Halifax regional council approved a request to send letters of intent to the Canadian Soccer Association for Halifax’s candidacy regarding the 2015 event.

There is no financial commitment needed at this point, as Coun. Darren Fisher said: “We’re not spending anything but a stamp tonight.”

A handful of councillors heavily opposed to the expense of a stadium had voted against sending the letters — a move that would have stopped the bid in its tracks.

“I don’t think I can fiscally feel confident moving forward,” said Coun. Jennifer Watts.

After much debate, council decided last week to move on to the second phase of the stadium project, which involves a closer look at the cost, possible design and location. The report is due back to council in December, and the CSA needs a firmer commitment to a stadium by January so it can make a decision on the host cities.

Coun. Reg Rankin expressed concern there wouldn’t be enough time to secure commitments from other levels of government.

But council was bolstered yesterday by recent comments made by Premier Darrell Dexter in media reports, expressing interest in a stadium pending the finalized business case.

HRM staff and Mayor Peter Kelly said they’ve already started knocking on the doors for provincial and federal partnership.

Focus on FIFA
Coun. Bill Karsten told council “let’s take a deep breath” on the issue.

“This is not about a stadium.… This is about whether we want to put our name forward and stay in the stream to host a pretty big event,” he said.
