I agree. It's just two blocks south of my home. I prefer shopping with local shops when possible, but it'll still be convenient to have a Target within an easy walk.

I'm not 100% sure it's a Target, but I did see a Starbucks kiosk in the space, which is typical of some Targets, and there's a banner on the outside advertising jobs being hired for by Target.

At minimum they're just applying for a liquor license, so it doesn't mean they have to have a bar at all. They could just be serving beers on their menu.

But yeah - what could possibly go wrong? LOL

I'm sort of hoping they'll open a location where the Macy's at Water Tower was, as rumored. Could be cool if they give it a flagship feel. Not sure what else will go into that space...

New zoning app up for the vacant lot on the SE corner of 63rd and Maryland in Woodlawn near the Cottage Grove stop. Total of 5 units, 60 feet in height with 58 units and ground floor retail. 41 of the 58 units to be under ARO (30 to 60% of the median).

Another zoning app up to build a new 5 story (58'10") building with 33 units, 16 parking, and ground floor commercial st 1138 W Belmont (&Clifton). This would get rid of the old 1 story Tenenbaum Hardware building (true value). This isn't far from the Belmont Red Line stop.

That's awesome. Going to go a long way to restoring 63rd street. Here's what it looks like now:

Okay this one is potentially huge. I'm sure a few like LVDW already know about it. Vacant land in South Shore near the highway has a new zoning application out to build a new film studio total over 451,000 sq ft with 95 parking spaces. Highest structure would be 62 feet high to the very top. This is the land bound by South Chicago, Blackstone, Harper, and 77th St. It also looks like there would be a new building also on the vacant lot on South Chicago just north of Blackstone. Not sure if the existing building next to that is part of this development or not. The applicant is the same address as RealD company from Beverly Hills (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RealD). Digging deeper, it is backed by a few film producers in LA (Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone, the producers for The Chi), Roadtown Enterprises who has a few studios in Atlanta and Mississippi, Real Estate developer Dakota Development (LA, NYC, etc), Loop Capital, and another company responsible for a film studio in Newark, NJ. Looks like there's some potentially serious backing to this. The Illinois Film Office endorses it too.

This is really part of something called Regal Mile Studios. As you can guess, this is just a few minutes walk to the historic and famed Regal Theater on 79th St (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Re...ago,_Illinois)). I think the plans are to build this studio and really a new film and entertainment district on the south side, which would involve bringing back Regal Theater to having more events.

Really great to see this. Last month there was a zoning app to renovate The Forum in Bronzeville to actual legitimate entertainment use again.

^ Damn! Nice find. Hope that this pans out.

Somebody needs to film a new Walking Dead: The Chicago Chapter TV show. I would love to see a bunch of undead walkers in the middle of Wicker Park

I think he's saying this is inevitable. 500k square is still pretty piddly for a studio, but Chicago needs every sound stage it can get at this point so hurray. I'm pretty sure some Hollywood celebrity is backing this one, but I forget who since I try not to think about Hollywood. I think it's hilarious how much money I'm making off these people and I don't even watch TV. My media diet is Spotify, incredibly dry history podcasts, and endless documentaries on YouTube.

I think I have it in my post but it's a few producers from The Chi plus others. It isn't huge, but also places like LA and Atlanta have studios on various parts of their metro area much smaller than this.

I'm actually more excited about the possibility of the New Regal Theater coming back stronger with more real events. Curious as to the very long term plans. The presentation talks about a new entertainment district. Who knows, but fun to think about..

Tribune tower getting its old sign back on. Personally, I think they should just leave it at "Chicago" but glad its getting added on in full!

from what I understand the film industry is booming in chicago, due to those tax incentives and the relative success of other studio projects like cinescape

there is also a plan for another studio facility in Hermosa

here is a woke article about it:

with how far the paper has sunk and what Alden Capital is probably about to to do it, not sure if anyone would really want the association moving forward
