Nice to see Kamloops represented.

Always love the dry scenery.

Here is a great shot of Victoria.

Growth constraints in BC always seem to be mountains. How big could Kamloops potentially get if it developed that whole valley?

I think about this all the time, but I always come to the conclusion that if they need to fit more people in, they'd find a way. Like, I don't see a scenario where BC cities stop growing because they're so constrained geographically. It would actually be cool to see in the distant future if this results in a very different built form in places like Kamloops and Kelowna, with them being much denser than typical cities of 300,000 to 500,000.

Just look at Chinese cities that are in mountains.

I would say Kamloops could easily double in size before needing to change its growth patterns to allow further expansion.

That said it would be a very linear city, stretching north and east along the South and North Thompson Rivers.

Also to the south is the rolling Nicola Valley (but that area becoming suburban sprawl is one of my worst nightmares given how beautiful it is).

Those semi-arid areas of BC are so beautiful but there's not all that much of it. I can see the attraction of these places but they'd fill up in a hurry if they saw rapid population growth.

I suppose we'll never see huge population growth in these areas like one sees in Nevada/Arizona and California's Inland Empire. When I see cities like Kelowna and Kamloops I can't help but think how gorgeous the topography is. At the same time, I'm horrified that it's been plowed under for a ranch house.

I suppose if climate forecasters are correct, BC (and Alberta) will have a whole lot more territory that looks like these semi-arid areas.

Kelowna is making inroads in that respect. There are a lot of towers proposed or under construction downtown, as well as a whole bunch of low-rise apartments. Kamloops may move in that direction too, but it is not growing nearly as fast as it's southern neighbour.

I had no idea low-rise apartments were a common form of development in Kelowna! When I visit I don't really stray from the downtown or Harvey Avenue corridor, and the Kelowna construction thread focuses mostly on towers, which for whatever reason look more like second homes, a place to retire, or whatever. In any case, they look expensive, inaccessible to most people and therefore not something you can really build a city on.

But I'm just saying that's my perspective from a distance, if I'm wrong then that's great.
