Matthews imo is probably more near-generational than generational.

Recent generational players:

Crosby (102 points in draft + 1 season), McDavid (48 points in 45 games in draft + 1 season), probably Ovi (52 goals, 106 points in draft +2 season - didn't play draft + 1 season due to strike) ...Malkin is probably near-generational. That's pretty well it.
I think the key is differentiating between a generational and an elite player. Pettersson could become an elite player, but generational is a stretch, especially with Matthews and McDavid in the league.

I don't like the term to begin with, but McDavid is the only generational player in the league right now in my books. Injuries the last two years and inconsistent line mates have halted Matthews progress towards that title.

This kid is near generational or even generational. Best draft pick since McDavid. When Pettersson gets a good winger or Boeser gets back to normal, he will be a consistent 100 point player, and compete with McDavid for best in world title.
Pettersson looks to be a great scorer, but so was Mike Bossy and Brett Hull and Denis Savard and host of other non-generational players. This generation it's McDavid, not Austin Matthews (hello plays in Toronto so is way overblown by the media) and it won't be Pettersson. McDavid is scary every play from every area of the ice, He's Guy LaFleur, he's Wayne Gretzky, he's Mario Lemieux, he's Sid Crosby type scary. Woe be the Oilers if McDavid gets hurt, the other guys are replaceable by good team play, McDavid is not.

What a win by the Oilers.

Nice comeback Calgary.

Man, if the Flames could even get league average goaltending they'd be able to be one of the top teams in the league. Lindholm on the top line with Johnny and Monny has been a revelation, and Chucky has grown into one of the best 2nd line players in the league. And Gio, well, if he was on a large market team they'd be talking about him for the Norris already.

But Smith, ugh. If he could only regain his form from the first half of last season. Too many more performances like what he showed in the second period last night and he'll be soon to lose the starting role to Rittich, who has been excellent in the backup role this season.

I read elsewhere that the Flames may have reached out to Steve Mason.

Smith is on a very short leash.

Smith has looked absolutely dreadful. I'd rather see Rittich in net more often.

Smith will get it together, hes always been kinda streaky, but we've seen flashes of brilliance from him this year already. But yeah, Lindholm! dude is on fire right now, and Neal is showing why he should get ice time with Johnny Hockey as well.

Calgary's win reminds me of the Miracle on Manchester LA vs Oilers April 1982.

Mason might be a good idea for the Flames.

The Jets used Mason to put the fear of god into Hellebuyck. It was an expensive scare tactic - but it worked (last season anyway).

Oilers send Evan Bouchard back to junior which is the right move. Do they bring someone up from the farm now? Ethan Bear?

Edit:
I see they called up Gravel.

Agree. Pettersson looks good, but not generational. McDavid is generational.

We're in an interesting period where it feels like Canadian teams have good young talent. Particularly Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. Montreal looks good, but not so much on youth. Ottawa is better than I expected, but seems like they might still need a rebuild.

Mason had issues staying healthy when he was with the Jets, and with the Flames' sub-par goaltending, they'll be even more screwed than they are now. They'll have to find a goalie who's .910 average or above and is able to stay healthy.
