Good. Too bad they didn't realise this years ago. There was never any other logical option (can you imagine a turning circle?).

Anyone know what's happened to this plan? I was walking through the "Underpass" today and it looks like there's an entire squatter camp in there and they've scrawled all kinds of stuff in chalk on the walls and pavement. They're obviously pissing in the corners because it smells horrible. It's embarrassing that this is all a few feet away from the new Senate building.

This plan was axed a couple years ago. Around the same time we went from 4 downtown LRT stations to 3.

Yup, it's the 80s all over again down there.

Isn't this still the plan?

I know there was a later plan that envisioned putting Rideau LRT station there, but the plan to remove the underpass and create a square pre-dates that LRT plan.

I'd love to see it move forward. It would really connect Confederation Square and Elgin with the Market. The underpass is a big psychological barrier and it's a dump.

This project would make a HUGE difference and could be done fairly quickly for relatively cheap (compared to say, the Sir John A. Parkway linear park; way more expensive and expansive while making little difference to most residents and tourists. Good project, but not as good as removing that damn underpass).

I noticed that there is something about this in the ByWard Market Public Realm website:

Quote:
The Gateways

Public space design at the intersections of Rideau/Sussex/Colonel By and St. Patrick/Murray/Sussex will be linked to a broader transportation analysis of how these intersections fit within Ottawa’s street network. This analysis will be undertaken in the coming months, with conceptual public space designs to follow.

Early thoughts for the Rideau/Sussex/Colonel By are to create a continuous, ground-level public space by removing the vehicular slip lanes from Rideau to Colonel By and the pedestrian tunnel known as the Rideau Underpass. This would provide opportunities for significant public art, greening, and the creation of an active building edge along the former train station in the long term.

Concept for the Rideau/Sussex/Colonel By intersection that removes the slip lanes and creates a ground-level public space.

https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/publi...lic-engagement

Scroll down to near the bottom to "The Gateways". Hopefully the folks looking at this and the folks looking at the Mackenzie-Colonel By cycling connection are talking to each other.

BTW there is also a survey about the ByWard Public Realm study and they are accepting comments until August 2: https://byward.metroquest.ca/

Posting this here. Part of the ByWard Market plan would transform the intersection. There is, or will be, an international design competition for the plaza. Imagine if Colonel By is closed to vehicles south of Daly, and the new Alexandra Bridge is built for active transportation and trams only, we could easily remove two more lanes.

There must be something wrong here. If you consider both images they posted, how is vehicular traffic going to get from the north end of Sussex Drive or the Alexandra Bridge to Colonel By Drive, if both lanes of Mackenzie are right turn only? Will Sussex have a southbound lane from Murray to Rideau?

It doesn't appear to have an extra lane on page 10 of the report: https://documents.ottawa.ca/sites/do...realm_en_0.pdf

Perhaps they're hoping on eventually getting back the extra wide sidewalk and in front of the US Embassy... assuming they're allowed to remove the bollards and there's no security issue.

Or they could just reverse one of the northbound lanes on Sussex north of York street.

If they don't do one or the other then I don't know what an acceptable reroute would be...

Maybe go west on Wellington and use the War memorial as a roundabout to swing back east on up the stub of Elgin back to Wellington - and then make a right on Colonel By?

Or go east on Murray and zigzag over to Rideau... except you're not allowed to turn left from Rideau to Colonel By right now. So instead - go east on Murray, south on Dalhousie and zigzag over to Daly ave and turn left beside the Westin Hotel.

I always forget that's basically the use of the ramp. If Colonel By is permanently closed south of Daly, which seems likely between the NCC's recent efforts and Yasir Naqvi's pledge during the election, maybe access from Mckenzie won't be necessary. The Westin and Senate Buildings will be the only destinations. Senators from Rockcliffe Park could go down Dalhousie and up Daly to access the Senate. I doubt a whole lot of people using the Alexandra Bridge would have the Senate (with exclusive parking) or Westin (tourist that likely walk to Civilization) as destinations.
