God some of these buildings are creepy and lifeless as hell. I just don't see the beauty in it. I mean, whatever happened to things like lovely and cozy. This is just like looking at death if it were a building.

The one with the neon lights is called "100 live & die" by Bruce Nauman. I couldn't find a name for the stone pillows.

Woah, that one with the neon lights is amazing! And what chu takin bout Anthony? Some of these buildings are amazing! They're not cozy but they sure are well designed. I think they're awesome as long as they're evened out with a couple buildings around with different architectural styles. Or if they stick out.

Kind of like in Germany where most of the buildings are old but the new ones are modern modern, like exceedingly modern. That's kind of what I imagine these structures to be in places like. Where they contrast everything around it. Again, those neon lights are amazing.

Minnaert Building in Utrecht by Neutelings Riedijk Architecten

Quote:
Rainwater pours through the roof of the Minnaert Building on the Uithof campus extension of the University of Utrecht to cascade noisily into a 150 by 30 foot basin filling half the building's cavernous central hall. This is on the second floor main circulation level, at which the building is connected by bridges to its neighbors. The water in the pool feeds a circulatory system by which the temperatures are controlled throughout the building, which houses facilities for three departments, including that of geophysics, and a restaurant serving the entire northwestern corner of the campus.

Great design. I love that the pool and pipes aren't hidden away but actually uncovered to show visitors how the system works.

Now there's something we can agree with.

I'm guessing this side of the building was never meant to be seen?
No trees, a wayward fire exit that is out of place, tiny windows that seem out of scale.

Native Youth Centre, Vancouver
Larry McFarland

Quote:
The Urban Native Youth Centre, located in the downtown Eastside, is a three-storey, multipurpose facility designed to support First Nation youth through a broad spectrum of social, educational, counseling, health, athletic and cultural programs. Urban First Nation youth are statistically at high risk for poverty, crime, violence, drug and alcohol addiction, health problems and social challenges, and lack opportunities for education and cultural participation. The youth range from age 13 to 25 and come from all over British Columbia and Canada. Many are living away from their home Indian Reservations for the first time and lack the familiar cultural and family support networks. Many are single parents. Most are impoverished.

The client's intent is to provide a sociable and engaging environment off the street, where youth feel a sense of belonging, where participation is encouraged in safe surroundings, and where support services are open and accessible. The mandate of the Urban Native Youth Centre is to be prominent, accessible, and relevant to youth from many varied First Nations cultural traditions.

Environmental stewardship and a connection with natural systems were deemed by the client to be critical aspects of traditional First Nation values; thus the goal of certifying the building at the LEED Platinum level. Notably, energy modeling has demonstrated that the building is capable of meeting 71 to 74 % energy savings versus the Canadian model national energy code. This would place the building among the most energy efficient in North America.

^Agreed. The front entrance is a bit sloppy but overall I really like the design. I like the horizontal and diagonal lines on the facade facing the corner, its like the architectural equivalent of the cable car lines over the intersection. That glass roof design is pretty original too.

Ooof...talk about a disparity between rendering and reality.

A commie block with glass and metal crap on it is still a commie block.

What do you mean? I'm sure it will resemble the rendering very much (except for the lighting effects of course) once it is finished. Kind of hard to base your opinion on a crappy gloomy photo with one aluminium panel attached to the concrete...
