I'm happy to report that one of the houses of Berkeley Square that has been heretofore photographically obscure is no longer a mystery. Number 10, home of at least four prominent Los Angeles families—the Taylors, the Reilleys, the Sterns, and the Allens—lasted from 1911 to 1962, when the Santa Monica Freeway plowed through the south side of the subdivision and condemnations for the Los Angeles School District took most of the balance. A recently unearthed newspaper photograph from 1925 serves as the basis for the illustration above.

Before Brownstein-Louis moved to 716-722 S. Los Angeles, they were located a few blocks away at 236-238 S. Los Angeles. The picture below shows their building on the right. USC dates the photo at 1910.

A close-up shows that the name "Newmark" still appears on the sign.

The 1909 CD shows the company as Brownstein, Newmark & Louis, but by 1911 it has become Brownstein-Louis Company, this time at 236-240 S. Los Angeles (I guess they expanded, hence the need to move). The 1915 CD shows them at their new address.

I found a site with an even earlier picture of Brownstein, Newmark & Louis, back when they were in the Baker and Arcadia Blocks (the lower right picture shows the building at the 236-240 S. Los Angeles address). The site is in Japanese, but Google Translate does enough to tell me that the pictures say it all!

This has been bugging me. What is the hotel on the northwest corner of Francisco and 7th Street?
You can see the sign, it says _____-ington Hotel.




My first thought was Washington Hotel, but it was located at 307 S. Figueroa.

It's the Wellington Hotel and Apartments. This is yet another detail of the USC Cityscape picture!

The only thing that tells you this is the same house are the two craftsmen-like 'supports' beneath the overhang.

Musso's on 6300 Wilshire. Joe Musso (The Musso of Musso and Franks) left his interest in that restaurant and opened up his own place on wilshire. It opened in the mid 1920's and remained until his death in 1946. Joe was married to my grandma, Emma Rovere, the sister of, yes you know.....BERT ROVERE!

I work for another city's public works department. That's a temporary water meter and hook-up. Given the proximity to the demolition site, I'd guess its there to connect to provide wash-down water. Legal then, not so much now....

Those are fake newer decorative/auxiliary street lights that the city of Los Angeles has installed for 10 years already. I have seen many types of these, especially around bus stops.

A note: Before moving to the Wilshire address, Effie Newstadt lived at 1217 W. 23rd St, Los Angeles, in a house that is, perhaps miraculously, still there. Of course, now, it is next door to a Chevron station... She appears at the 23rd street address in the 1897 directory.
