There will be nothing to announce. The study will simply say that the idea of a train to Banff does exist and it might cost x amount of money. Then nothing will happen.

You are correct, sadly.

Fair enough; Highway 1A is supposed to get significant upgrades anyway so it's not like the area is being neglected.

If the economy had continued as it had until 2014, or even if until 2019 then I think we'd be needing to increase capacity into the mountains within the next decade or so. Now that can probably be put on hold. I'm sure things will turn around eventually and then the conversation will need to be had - do we increase road capacity or transit?

Theoretically, expanding transit makes more sense but it is more difficult as it will need to be improved everywhere in the park for it to be good enough that people use it. If people still drive because it's the only option that makes sense, then it doesn't matter how much rail capacity you add.

I would predict we'll need to add one more road lane and fill that up before the political case for rail really is good enough.

Nothing will happen, this train service has less going for it than HSR between Calgary and Edmonton. What could work is bus service from airport to Banff. In Japan I travelled from Narita to Tokyo and other cities by bus, it worked great. Oh wait we already have a bus from Calgary to Banff, maybe we should make it better first?

Banff and Canmore are overcrowded as it is, which is something to keep in mind if this proposal is touting increased tourism as a benefit.

One issue would be the First Nations reserve that it passes through - even if the line is technically within CP lands, their buy-in is still needed.

Are they overcrowded with people or are they overcrowded with cars?

Cars. Trying to limit the number of people trying to visit somewhere is unrealistic, and foolish. Trying to get some of them to go there via a method other than a car is wise.

If only there was some method that didn't use roads and highways that could deliver people and their luggage there on a regular, predictable basis....
