This tower looks really good u/c on Google Earth, if you want to see how KL is laid out and where it is in relation to the bulk of the skyscrapers. The true magnitude of it doesn't really come through in photos, probably because of its setting. There's something about KL's urban fabric that reminds me of Los Angeles from an overhead perspective.

The Klang Valley is geographically delineated by the Titiwangsa Mountains to the north and east and the Strait of Malacca to the west. It extends to Rawang in the northwest, Semenyih in the southeast, and Klang and Port Klang in the southwest. The conurbation is the heartland of Malaysia's industry and commerce. As of 2012, the Klang Valley is home to roughly 8 million people. (Wikipedia)

Insane height and an awkward design.

Australian architecture, Fender Katsalidis designed as symmetry crystalline tower

As the building continues to rise, its crystalline massing and faceted glazing are making a substantial impact on the Kuala Lumpur skyline. The geometric expression of the tower, comprised of multiple triangular shapes, reflects those found in traditional Malaysian arts and crafts.

The tower is meant to evoke the image of Tunku Abdul Rahman as he declared independence for Malaysia.

Yep, Malaysia is actually the 12th most visited country in the world, more so than say Russia, Canada or Greece.
KL is the 9th most visited city, neck n neck with NYC (and with more tourists than say Rome or Tokyo).

Many come for a first world version of Thailand (landscapes) -but hassle-free and English speaking

some of the world's best diving

ecotourism -epic jungles such as Teman Negara are the world's oldest, being untouched for 130 million years and thus some of Earth's most biodiverse hotspots (and quite accessible):

Then there's the 600 year mix of cultures -Malay, Chinese, Indian, Arab, Indigenous tribes, Peranakan, British, Dutch, Portuguese, and their descendants. The latest migrants are Indonesians,
Africans and Syrians. Everywhere you go is an ongoing fusion

...plus the epic food wars between them:

Also dotted with hill stations - highlands that the colonials used to set up Little Britains and tea plantations, to escape the heat among the cloud forests

The country's split between the urbanised peninsular (40% of land area), and the wild islands (60%) -the eastern side is a whole new world on the giant island of Borneo

It would be a mistake to just visit KL though, which is all about modernity (eg luxury malls and shopping districts, plus 5 of the world's Top 20 tallest buildings). A general rule of equatorial SE Asia, for visitors and locals alike: daytime is for beaches and landscapes (or malls), night time for your urban exploring when everything comes alive.

KL does have a vibrant Little India though - note how quiet it is due to daytime:

The Exchange is actually way taller than the Petronas Towers but its massive roof isn't considered part of its architectural height, rather that it's a 'spire'. KL is the city along with Dubai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and NYC that's going to vie for title of most supertalls in the near future:

Other than the spectacular landscapes beyond, the UNESCO World Heritage cities of Melaka and Georgetown show off the history and culture KL misses out on.

The latter especially is a real hidden star of Asia - carpeted with historic shophouses, colonial gems, hipster joints, temples, mosques, bars, restaurants and street markets. The whole place comes alive by dusk, when the cool night brings everyone into the streets.

it's also located on a dramatic island, ringed with resorts
