Houston is Such a Sexy Beast!!!

One question, though...is that smog that I saw in some of the pictures?

Those were from July 4th. It's low level temperature inversion from passing storms mixed with fireworks.

Visible pollution does still occur, particularly with inversion conditions (as Reverb mentioned), but it's vastly improved compared to decades ago. When I lived there as a kid in the 60s, the visible pollution rivaled that of Pittsburgh's at the time. But over the decades, due to strict EPA and state air quality standards implemented by industry (along with requirements for low polluting vehicles), visible pollution improved greatly (in both Houston and Pittsburgh). There are many days there with clear blue skies, affording outstanding skyline views, whereas in the past such days were rare. This is not to downplay that bad pollution days still can occur, especially when regional stagnation conditions occur during the summer.

Very tropical and excessively humid from mid April through early October. Feels just like coastal Florida. Fair amount of palm trees used as landscaping in some areas, and other tropical vegetation, and large areas of pine forest. No sand except right on the coast. For some reason, you find sand in Florida even in the center of the state. In much of Florida, it's hard to keep yards green because the water soaks right through the sand. In Houston, the vegetation tends to look more healthy because the clay soil holds water well when it rains. 2011 was a big exception (the mother of all droughts). In the last 12 months, some areas of Houston have had over 60 inches of rain, and 50-55 inches have been common in the last 12 months.

Reverb does a great job of capturing the feel of humidity through photos. There really is a period (mid October through about mid April) when it's mostly very nice and mild to cool, and sometimes a bit cold. Some of the cold, rainy days in the winter can be about like the worst of Portland's winter weather. I don't know which is worse, that or the heat and humidity of summer.

I can't resist giving weather info (that's been part of my career). Sorry about that!

Very cool shots. I always like your skyline photos, and that last one is great. That one of the windshield of the van is almost abstract.

Reverb, you always do a great job capturing things about Houston that showcase it's authenticity (including it's humidity.....how do you do that :-) ). It's also good to see shots of some of the westside skylines as we rarely see those. Your work is always appreciated thanks for posting.

Houston (all Texan cities for that matter) really intrigues me. I'd jump at the chance to visit just to see what I'd think of it in person. The built form reflects a lack of public consultation and zoning. You can tell Houston has low taxes. Everything is so haphazard and unruly. It truly is the "Don't Tread On Me" American prototype city.

Your pictures make me want to buy a ticket when I'm back in North America this summer, and do a Texas two week journey. Man, so tempting.
