The Van Fleet Apartments 230 S. Flower Street

I am confused by the 'New Hotel' sign. Is it on top of the house or is it at the back of the Van Fleet?
__
The "New Hotel" signage behind the Van Fleet was the "New Hotel Elmar" at 235 S Hope St, one block east.

Here, 1928, looking south from the retaining wall that ran from Second down to the stairs adjacent the Third St tunnel:

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../id/1181/rec/1

Flower/2nd/Hope/3rd from the '21 Baist's:

In 1965, the block looked more like this --

http://jpg2.lapl.org/spnb2/00017502.jpg

-- Flower runs north across 3rd near the center of the image. Note Cinnabar running parallel and 2nd/Hope/retaining wall at upper right beneath the Chandler (the "New Hotel Elmar" shot was taken from here, facing toward us). Now, note the low date palm to the right of the Van Fleet in er's image; I believe that's the same date palm in the above shot, halfway up the block toward 2nd.

Thanks a bunch on clearing this up about this humble cottage- I never have seen the image looking south that makes this apparent ! Must get to Central LAPL to fix the big Bunker Hill map of notes I'd donated to Glen's history dept---

[SIZE="4"]Cleo Moore died in her sleep at age 49. If you wanted to see her movies you had to find them downtown...not in the suburbs!

The actress is Photo #3 isn't Cleo Moore. It's Janis Carter.

I used to work at Griffith Park Pool as a locker attendant in 1960. I caught a young kid marking the marble walls separating the toilets. and mad him remove it with chlorine and a brush. I would have been sent to jail now day for doing that. He was a close neighbor of mine but that pissed me off.

below: The only description on this photo was Hope Street, Bunker Hill.

Cal State Library

above: Can you imagine the sordid 'going-ons' inside the Hotel Elmar.

This is a good example of a photograph with 'noir' qualities.....
The transient SRO hotel...the lone man....the empty streets and overcast sky.
I knew we had seen the New Elmar someplace...this was on page 19 from Oct. 09

A small Spanish colonial-style house, probably from the later 1920s, used to be on a triangular patch of land in the middle of where Sunset curves down to Crescent Heights. In the early '30s, it was a fortune-teller/astrologer's home and office. By the '40s, the gay-friendly "Casanova Club" had moved into it. Somewhere in the '50s, it became a Beatnik coffeehouse named "Pandora", which evolved into a live music venue called "Pandora's Box." What then happened to that little house in 1966 made history.

This is so excellent Beaudry! Thank you for figuring this out for me. I guess I should have realized the 'New Hotel' sign might have
an additional word....like the actual 'NAME' of the hotel. Sheesh...I can be slow some times.

At first I thought they were just shaving off the facades to make the building fit. Now I am not so sure.
Were the buildings totally destroyed or modified?

The whole act of straightening Spring Street is a bit confusing to me.
Earlier in the thread I believe we had overhead views of the area....but I can't seem to find them at the moment.
GSJansen posted a follow-up post regarding the construction/deconstruction. Unfortunately, some of the USC-images are no longer available. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=2747 Could this "1930" image from LAPL, be related?

Street vacation goes on all the time. If you ask me, we're losing way too many of our little noirish nooks and crannies (often to developers).

Would like a better look at this map by Felix Viole:

http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...ANS1E4JE6P.jpg

Felix worked on this one too.

Notice 4% paid on savings accounts. 5% on [longer] term deposits. Medicinal Wines. Presaging prohibition, or just covering all bases? Santa Monica is reachable electrically through "four different electric roads."
