The adaptive resue of a derelict heritage building into three distinct street townhomes. The project will restore much of the building's heritage brickwork and will add new modern elements such as corrugated metal cladding, a wood slat-screened porch, and pops of colour to provide identity for each unit.
Lots of little adaptive reuse projects like this are what really bring neighborhoods back. I've seen many of these projects in Toronto that face onto tight little alleyways and they're awesome. Tons of potential for more of this given Hamilton's extensive network of alleyways and old garages. They'd make cool little affordable housing projects.

I doubt it will be affordable. Personally I am all for ultra modern builds but this one is just ugly.

I think I like it. I definitely like that an abandoned building is being turned into a triplex (or are these freehold apartments?). Even if it's not exactly my taste, there's room for all kinds of different design, and Hamilton could use more small, creative projects like this one.
I knew the people who owned this building for years. It was used by one of the rental companies in the city for storage of extra and large items. They had been trying for years to do something with the building but the neighbours fought them every step of the way. They even fought them when they tried to paint the building. The neighbours hated the building but did not like any changes to the building. And they all had a different idea on what to do with the building. Some wanted it down for bigger back yards and some wanted it down for extra parking in the area and some wanted housing low and mid rise.

That could be the reason for the fast pace of the work. Get'er done before a NIMBY puts a cog in it.
