It wouldn’t look as bad without the tacky neon lighting.

Kaohsiung looks like a tacky mainland Chinese city, like it belongs in hainan. Taipei’s building designs (not all) have more sophistication/restraint. Less neon.

Too much nouveau riche development in Taiwan. Seoul looks more sophisticated.

Such a comment shows that you don't understand that Taiwanese cities have different types and play different roles

You don’t seem to consider the difference between office buildings and residences

Most highrise (>100m) buildings in Taipei are for office use, while most highrise (>100m) buildings in Kaohsiung are for residential use.

It’s incredible to judge with neon lights. This is a very strong prejudice.

I have heard some comments from foreigners that Kaohsiung has fewer Chinese-style buildings than Taipei, and it is less like a Chinese city.

I am judging with western eyes. Of course it’s all opinion, and in my opinions There are also many ugly Buildings in Taipei, but Kaohsiung seems to have a monopoly on tacky neon-lighting and other gratuitous use of design flair. Even the train stations in Kaohsiung have the kind of postmodern tackiness that never ages well.

Compare this with Taipei’s airport mrt, Daan, or Ximen stations, which are much more minimal, restrained, and sophisticated. The minimalism makes Taipei look much more global Than Kaohsiung

Thank you for your comment. I'll respect your opinion.

First, all you mentioned are MRT stations, and I hope you can understand the huge difference between the central government’s funding for the Taipei and Kaohsiung MRT construction.
But can you specify more clearly which train stations in Kaohsiung? TRA or MRT station? We welcome any suggestions that can help us improve.

Second, I agree that the minimalism-style buildings look good, but the reality is that private residences with minimalism style are not easy to sell in Taiwan. Taiwanese may have different tastes from yours and prefer to buy luxuriously decorated houses.

Finally, I want to remind you that it’s better not to comment that a Taiwanese city looks like it belongs in a part of China.
This will definitely make most Taiwanese feel angry.

I agree with you. There are too many nouveau riche development in Taiwan. I cannot understand why they want Taiwanese-style European building. These buildings just kill my eye.

This one is definitely not the worst “nouveau riche” design I have seen in Taiwan.
The worst kind is those “neo-classic with a Taiwanese twist” full of ornaments, brown facades and unnecessary design elements. Farglory, specifically, has been exploiting these designs all over Taiwan and will definitely age horribly.
