For perspective, Flint is about 1/12 the population of Austin (961,855 / 81,252). I know it's not a very meaningful computation, and definitely not a contest, but that would be like Austin having ~600 murders for the year right now.

The crime stats the city releases weekly show, as of yesterday (9/12):
- 47 murders/nonnegligent homicides
- 1 negligent homicide/manslaughter (involuntary)
- 1 negligent homicide vehicle/boat/snowmobile
- 2 justifiable homicides

https://www.cityofflint.com/wp-conte...ND_2021B-1.pdf

So, 51 total homicides but 47 for the purposes of this thread. Right?

My post on Aug. 25 saying Flint was at 48 was not totally correct because MLive started using the total homicide number, instead of the murder number, causing it to appear there was a huge jump when there really wasn't (this was AFTER the stretch of 8 murders in 10 days but those were already accounted for).

Relatively speaking, Austin's murder rate is still way low. We rank 28th out the top 30 cities for lowest murder rate. Only San Diego and El Paso have lower ones than us. This also cites 1984 as being the year that Austin had its highest murder number with 59 murders. I had previously always heard it was 1991 with 49 murders. In either case, even with the higher number of murders we have now, it's still worth noting that Austin is more than twice as big now as it was back then.

Austin shatters all-time high number of homicides in 60 years of record keeping

Tony Plohetski
Austin American-Statesman

Comparable national FBI crime data from 2020 won't be available for several weeks. But according to FBI crime data from 2019 — the most recent year available — Austin’s violent crime rate of 400 incidents per 100,000 residents ranked 28th among the 30 largest cities. Only El Paso and San Diego had lower violent crime rates. Austin also ranked near the bottom of the list in 2018 and 2017.

Doug Kantor, a 25-year-old tourist visiting from Michigan, was killed and 13 others were injured in a mass shooting on Sixth Street in downtown Austin on June 12.
According to police records going back to 1960, the previous record for the most homicides in a year was 59 in 1984, when the homicide rate was 13.2 per 100,000 residents, more than double what it is today.

That spike came during a three-year period that saw the highest homicide numbers the city had ever recorded. The city had 57 in 1982 and 58 in 1983. The numbers then began steadily decreasing after spiking in 1984.

Since 1960, the city has averaged 36 homicides a year, with 2021 already marking the most since 1995, when Austin had 49.

Among the 60 cases this year, investigators have filed charges in 49, roughly 82%, and are actively investigating the other 11, said Cmdr. Pat Connor, who oversees the department's violent crime division.

A driver was killed Tuesday morning in Northeast Austin, marking the city's 61st homicide of the year, Austin police said.

Officers responded just after 9:15 a.m. to the intersection of Cameron Road and Rutherford Lane, just north of U.S. 183, after receiving several 911 calls about a possible drive-by shooting.

Thanks for the clarifications. True, I was not distinguishing between nonnegligent homicides and other types of homicide.

Kalamazoo hits 11 in the city; 21 in the county (by my count - MLive says 19 for the county). The suspect in this latest case was arrested all the way in Oregon by Kalamazoo detectives, with the help of Oregon State Police, after his roommate was found dead in his apartment during a welfare check over Labor Day weekend.

Bad week in Austin with 4 murders since Sunday including one today. That's 10 murders for September so far and we're only half way through the month. By comparison, March saw 11 murders the whole month.

Portland has 65 homicides so far, of which 60 or 61 are officially classified as murders. The all-time record for homicides is 70, set in 1987.

nyc as of 9/12/21

murders
2021 = 325
2020 = 340
% chg = -4.4%

the rest is a mixed bag, some up, like assault & rape,
others are down, like burglary & transit incidents (ridership is way down of course)

Are these figures for city or metro population?
I didnt imagine Vancouver, edmonton and Winnipeg to have a rate of around 5 or 6/100.000

Its metro. Montreal hasn't had 40 homicides since 2007.

Yeah Montréal island with 2 million people (basically city proper, but long story) is basically steady at 25-30 in recent years.

Yes, its Metro. Little Winnipeg has about as many murders as Vancouver and Montreal (800K to 2,800K to 4,300K).

I wonder if the spike in murders in austin are mostly drug related? With all the money that's in austin now i can see how it could be a lucrative market for drug dealers.

Portland up to 66 after a shooting at a popular bar in a relatively upscale part of the city:

One man killed, two others hurt after shooting at NW Portland pizza restaurant

I don't think so. You do hear about drug deals gone bad occasionally, but Austin doesn't have turf wars going on between rival street gangs on a big scale at least.

I don't quite understand how it all works, but a former coworker explained to me that in most of the state of Texas a specific prison gang who is affiliated with a cartel owns a territory, and someone has to pay a tax to sell drugs there if the gang/cartel did not supply them.

I never understood why, but apparently Austin does not operate in this manner. Anyone can sell anything from anywhere without being taxed. This has lead to a relatively peaceful situation here.

A lot of the drug violence in other cities stem from some group attempting to sell drugs they bought from a different gang/cartel without paying the tax.

I have no idea how accurate this is, but that's how it was explained to me by someone who claimed to know.
