Speed-limiting devices to be required in B.C. commercial vehicles

Heavy commercial vehicles will soon be required to have speed-limiting technology installed.

The digital technology will help moderate speeds on B.C. highways in an effort to bring more safety, the province said.

The mandatory use of speed-limiter devices comes into effect on April 5, 2024, and was announced back in December 2023.

“Heavy commercial vehicles with a gross-vehicle-weight rating of more than 11,793 kilograms that were manufactured after 1994 will be required to have the devices installed in their vehicles to operate in the province,” B.C. Ministry of Transportation staff said in a release.

“The devices must be programmed to a maximum speed of 105 km/h, which effectively prevents these vehicles from accelerating past that speed.”

Any commercial vehicle operating without a speed limiter is subject to a fine, including a victim surcharge of $368.

Legislative amendments have been made to the Motor Vehicle Act, but some vehicles are exempt from the legislation including emergency vehicles and motorhomes.

The B.C. government said that other provinces have this legislation in place already and that it has proven to work in reducing crashes.

hopefully this will end the semi trying to overtake a semi on a 2-lane highway which messes up everything behind them both while they slowly drive almost the same speed.

- closes a major E-W route into the city.
- closes the alternative people found, which has always been a public road.

1000 more cars for East Hastings/Pender should be fun Dunsmuir Viaduct is already backed up most of the time headed downtown so I doubt many people head that way.

Weird that the city thinks it might only be for a few weeks. Hopefully they have signage on Powell Street telling people the overpass is blocked off except for commercial/business usage.

A check point will be setting up at Waterfront Road and Main St and will be restricted to vehicles with destinations along Waterfront road to pass. This will be in effect starting Monday, April 8th and will be in place for at least a couple of weeks and potentially until September 2024.

Ha ha, weird how now the Port of Vancouver is responsible for Waterfront Road now but two years ago when a sink hole opened on Waterfront road, my recollection is they tried to pin that work on the city.

It's a private road, owned by the Port of Vancouver, with an agreement that the City of Vancouver is responsible for maintaining it. There were lawyers involved when the sink hole opened up, and the City carried out the repairs, so presumably it was confirmed that the agreement is still applicable. The Port decides who can use the road.

The outcome is simple enough, but there must have been some complexity as it did take them an extended period of time to come to that conclusion (weeks or months) as the sink hole languished. Why are there not more sink hole news stories that we can reference..

At any rate, it is probably a traffic gong-show down at Main and Powell and on Hastings today.
