My Los Ángeles

Bumming around Los Angeles on a Sunday, July 19, 2020. All photos by me.

A landmark from my high school years, eating here with friends after a movie or a concert.

Me.

Toypurina.

Transplant.

Lunch time at one of our go-to Mexican restaurants.

She's making fresh tortillas. And don't worry, diners are socially distanced. And this is their patio; restaurant indoor dining is currently banned in all of California.

Margarita. We got a pitcher.

Nopalitos.

Fish taco.

Shrimp enchilada.

Fútbol.

Back in South Pasadena; home again, home again, jiggety-jig.

Mean, awesome! The street art was incredible. Was that mostly from the alleys in mid city (or was it in Echo park? I forget)

Thanks! Yes, LA has some really great street art. These were mostly in the alleys of Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown.

first time I've seen the rising grand ave proj from the east, from along 1st St. It took over 40 yrs to replace a supposedly temporary parking structure...almost hard to believe that gap on bunker hill is finally being filled in.

Tall skinny palm trees aren't native to LA, yet I've never seen so many of that type of palm anywhere else in the world....but I'm sure they exist.

I've seen some really impressive group of urban murals in other cities...recall photos of some very good ones in a thread on atlanta here awhile ago...so they (or things like food) don't say 'LA' as much as things like skinny palm trees do.

always like seeing images that are the essence of a community....took a lot of work to post all the pics in your thread.

Thanks for the comments!

And now, to switch it up...

The area around my work... photos by me.

The Thrifty ice cream plant. When I first started working in the area (gosh, practically 10 years ago), I got excited when I stumbled upon this, but was disappointed to learn that they don't do tours or tastings. Yeah, it's not fancy ice cream, but hey, if they did tours and tastings, I'd be all up in there.

I don't know if they're the WORLD'S best fish tacos, but they are indeed pretty damn good.

Mmmm, banh mi...

The Circle K where I sometimes buy lottery tickets.

The underpass I drive through every weekday on my way home from work.

And now, my drive home from work. This particular spot is about halfway through my drive; it only takes me about 25 minutes to get home from work, and I don't even take the freeway.

Almost home...

Home. The view from the entryway to my apartment, looking out to the courtyard of my apartment building. Time to check the mail.

Friday evening dinner out, 7.24.2020.

Mango margarita.

Seafood enchiladas.

Out and about, enjoying Saturday, 7.25.2020.

Many "beg buttons" have been disabled in the City of Los Angeles since the COVID-19 pandemic; the traffic lights/pedestrian signals have been put on a cycle whereby you don't have to press the button. The traffic lights themselves have also been timed to slow traffic down, being in the early days of the stay at home orders, people were speeding on surface streets.

Me.

A photo shoot was going on.

More transplants.

I really don't like the plates with the busy/cheesy graphics.

An early dinner at one of our favorite, chill spots.

My first beer of the evening.

I had elk sausage, red cabbage, garlic brussels sprouts, pickles and mustard.

My 2nd beer of the evening.

I thought this was a funny table; I was telling my partner that the group consisted of a gay-sounding John Malkovich, the lead singer from Mazzy Star, Raymond Burr, Ringo Starr and a mutual friend to all of them.

Then we ordered pretzels.

The guy at this table was getting really drunk. Then left, and he left his hand sanitizer.

My third beer of the evening.

And then dessert. I pigged out this evening, obviously.

This restaurant is in a particularly Orthodox Jewish section of Los Angeles, and being that it was Saturday evening, I guess some of them were out walking to their synagogues.

My dinner.

My dessert. A scoop of taro ice cream and a scoop of hazelnut cream.

now this is my kind of bumming around.

a perfect homebound corona viewing thread.

it's an awesome thread and it doesn't get more los angeles than all that. ha.

i noticed the mural of the great cesar chavez.
i was lucky enough to meet him a couple times.
he came around our college often to speak as there were migrant workers he was working with on farms nearby.
he was a real hero of mine and of course so many others.

Yes good stuff Sopas, thanks for sharing.

LA21st, same here I don’t go too far, mostly going out for the essentials here in the Valley, and the days I go into the office in Ventura county. I haven’t been downtown since the pandemic started.

Thanks for the comments!

ChrisLA and LA21st, I'm glad you're staying safe, and doing your part to keep everyone safe too. My partner and I have been staying home as much as we can, but maybe for the past month or so, we've been venturing out. We try to avoid large crowds, and we make sure we wear our masks when we go out. Lately we've been dining out at places that offer outdoor seating... we try not to do that too much, but we admit that it gives us a feeling of things being somewhat back to normal.

That being said, we went out to lunch yesterday and did a little bit of hiking; we were nervous at first because the area we ate at was kind of crowded and it was the first time we did the sidewalk dining with large groups of pedestrians walking by often (last week we did sidewalk dining for the very first time but there weren't very many pedestrians walking around), but for the most part people were behaving with the physical distancing, and most people were masked (except people eating, of course). Up until now, we had been eating at restaurants with their own patios, so it's not like a parade of people were walking by us constantly.

That being said, here are some pictures I took of my Sunday, taken August 2, 2020. Out and about.

I've never had fried avocados before; I've always wondered what that would be like.

Ciders.

For lunch we had salads. My partner had the salmon and mixed green salad.

I had the baby black kale and quinoa salad.

The marine layer started coming in. I guess that's what keeps the Palos Verdes, verde. Of course it's really verde in the winter and spring because of the rain we get during that period, and in the spring it's a color of wildflowers, on top of the verde.

Drove to another part of the peninsula. The marine layer had really set in.

My car is the little economy hatchback in the middle.

Love it, there is no place like Southern California. You really have to live here to enjoy and take advantage of all there is to offer and see.
