Foreigners visiting for the first time are usually surprised by the beauty of Taiwan, which is fairly small but has many hidden gems.

Reddit user u/AberRosario recently shared one of them — a stunning photo from Facebook Group “City Talk” of a view overlooking Kaohsiung, with Mount Kavulungan, also known as Mount Beidawu (北大武山), as its backdrop.

The Fuji Mountain-like image was well received by social media users with many asking the location and the name of the building situated smack-dab in the center of the photo.

Enthusiastic Reddit users quickly explained that the building is actually the Chang-gu World Trade Center (長谷世貿聯合國大樓), more commonly known as the “Grand 50 Tower” among Taiwanese.

The photo has led many foreigners to express interest in visiting the city and climbing Mount Kavulungan someday, after learning from Taiwanese Reddit users that its unusual name comes from the Paiwan aborigine language.

Crazy. This picture popped up on my Facebook feed. It's gone viral.

It's an incredible shot, and really shows how different cities in the south can look on low pollution days. Living in Tainan, we'd always be amazed at the days we could see the mountains from the city. Unfortunately, it was a rare occurrence.

Photo of the Day: Mount Kavulungan towers over Taiwan's Kaohsiung

Netizens marvel at spectacular view of Kaohsiung's skyline with Mount Kavulungan looming above

(Facebook, 城事.說 City Talk photo)

This stunning photo of Kaohsiung's skyline with majestic Mount Kavulungan (北大武山, Beidawu) towering over the city was a hit on social media last week.

The photo was originally posted on the Facebook community Taiwan City Talk (城事.說 City Talk) on Aug. 16. The administrator of the community told Taiwan News the photo was captured from Shoushan, also known as Monkey Mountain, in Kaohsiung's Gushan District in August.

The prominent building protruding from the skyline in the center of the frame is the Chang-gu World Trade Center. Located in Sanmin District, the tower stands 222 meters tall and was completed in 1992; it has since been surpassed in height by 85 Sky Tower in 1997 at 378 m and Farglory THE ONE in 2017 at 267.6 m.

On Sept. 28, the photo was posted on the social media site Reddit, where it gained 503 upvotes and drew attention from foreign readers. Many who had traveled to or lived in Kaohsiung marveled at the clear skies and spectacular view as the city has a reputation for being frequently blanketed in a thick layer of smog due to the presence of shipyards, steel factories, and petrochemical plants.

Mount Kavulungan was named by the Paiwan indigenous tribe, who consider it a sacred mountain.
