Food, relaxation and more at Abe's Farm
By Pau Apilado | InFlight – January 14, 2013

Abe’s Farm in Mt. Arayat, Pampanga. Photo by Kai Huang

Pau Apilado finds food the main attraction at Larry Cruz’s Abe’s Farm hideaway at the foothills of Mt. Arayat in Pampanga

Location. Abe’s Farm is the late restaurateur Larry Cruz’s four-room countryside resort at the foothills of Mt. Arayat in Barangay Ayala in Magalang, Pampanga, about an hour's drive from Manila. Larry Cruz started the LJC group of restaurants, now with 11 brands and 17 outlets nationwide, including the famous Cafe Adriatico in Malate, catering to the bohemian and upmarket crowd.

First Impression. I didn’t know what to expect as I walked up the narrow stone steps leading to Abe’s Farm. The main house looked small from out front, like a hobbit’s house from The Lord of the Rings movie set. Once inside I was surprised by the spaciousness of this split-level “hut” made of bamboo, antique wood and adobe.

Clark’s Continued Growth In Tourism Brings Hotel Investment Opportunities
Release Date: 2013-01-14
Clark International Airport (CRK) announced 71% increase in the number of passengers arriving at Clark for 2012 that results to increased accommodation demand.

CLARK, FREEPORT, Pampanga, Jan. 15, 2013— Clark International Airport (CRK) announced a large increase in the number of passengers arriving at Clark for 2012. This increase boosted tourism and accommodation demand in Clark this 2012 and the growth is seen to carry on to 2013 and beyond.

Clark International Airport recorded a 71% increase in passenger traffic or a total of 1.3 million passenger arrivals for both international and domestic flights in 2012—higher than the 767,000 recorded passengers in 2011. International passengers alone numbered 1,013,100 or a 77%increase over 2012; whilst domestic passenger traffic grew 613% to 299,883. This passenger growth is expected to be sustained this 2013.

As Clark’s tourism growth increases demand for hotel accommodation will also rise and pressure on the local international and domestic tourist hotels for rooms is already being seen with weekends and holidays being sold out to capacity.

Condo and hotel room property investments enable investors to own a room or suite property within a high-end hotel. This room or suite then generates revenue for the investor with check-ins and rentals. This type of investment has become popular with Clark and Angeles City investors as it has the opportunity to give high returns and steady income due to the continued growth in tourism and the high occupation rates of quality hotels in the area. Upmarket hotels such as the Grandview Tower Hotel provides the primary investment advantage as they possess strategic locations, excellent reputations and flexible financial service.

7-Eleven to open 300 new stores
By Manila Standard Today | Posted on Jan. 19, 2013 at 12:01am

Philippine Seven Corp., operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores, announced a three-year expansion program that involves the opening of 300 new stores in Luzon and the Visayas.

PSC chief executive Victor Paterno said the expansion program would involve the opening of 100 stores in Cebu and the neighboring islands and another 200 new stores in Luzon.

“These areas, in particular the metro provinces of Cebu and Ilocos, are fit and very ripe hubs for c-store growth mainly because of the locations’ rapid increase in economic activity, attractive tourism venues and being centers of education,” Paterno said.

7-Eleven recently opened 13 stores in Mandaue, Lahug, Banilad and Cebu City. It also opened 172 stores in Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, La Union, Pangasinan and Baguio.

City of San Fernando cleans for Guinness
By Jovi T. De Leon
Saturday, January 19, 2013

THE City Government of San Fernando led by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez will aim for a Guinness World Record as it embarks on a massive and simultaneous citywide clean-up drive from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on February 1 this year.

The projected biggest clean-up drive ever will involve an estimated 200,000 participants and volunteers from schools, city hall, the private sector, Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, barangays, non-government organizations, common folk, and government agencies like the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Public Works and Highways, Agriculture, Budget and Management, Education, Health, Social Welfare and Development, Tourism and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

According to Regina Rodriguez of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office -- which conceptualized citywide clean-up -- the drive will cover the stretch of MacArthur Highway from Barangay Telabastagan to Barangay San Nicolas.

It will involve the cleaning of barangays, schools, and roadsides and in particular waterways and canals snaking from the north, passing through Barangay Saguin and Magliman down to the San Fernando River in Barangay San Juan.

Eastward, the clean-up will take on the inner waterways that cascade via the Del Carmen Creek and will also cover small rivers in inner city barangays like Lourdes, Del Pilar and Sta. Teresita.

Cities awarded best legislative councils
Posted by Online on Jan 19th, 2013

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga
– Two cities from Pampanga have been awarded the Regional Local Legislative Awards (LLA) by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) for exemplary performance in passing and adopting effective resolutions for their constituents, DILG announced Friday.

Angeles City received the awards for Highly Urbanized City category while San Fernando is the honoree for the component city category.
Meanwhile, Cuyapo in Nueva Ecija received the awards for 1st to 3rd class municipality, and Samal in Bataan for 4th to 6th class municipality.
“The Award recognizes the exemplary performance of Sanggunians of cities and municipalities in legislating measures that help build the foundation of meaningful local administration and development,” Local Government information officer Miriam Gaviola explained.
Gaviola said that for this current term, performances of local councils from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012 were reviewed.
Gaviola explained that the said regional honorees will automatically become Central Luzon’s national bets in the said national search for best legislative councils.
Winners were chosen by a committee composed of the DILG Regional Director as chair and PCL Regional Council head as vice chairman with the Regional Chiefs of Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Budget and Management, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources and representative from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry as members. VALUABLE PIECE OF HISTORY: A vintage photo of PASUDECO (Pampanga Sugar Development Company)

"The PASUDECO Sugar Central was the first Filipino-financed sugar central in Pampanga. Built through the initiative of the Pampanga Sugar Development Company, the structure was constructed by the Honolulu Iron Works.

The Pampanga Sugar Development Company had its beginnings in 1917 when a group of American capitalists consisting of Atherton, Searby, Moir, Guthrie and others came to the Philippines for the purpose of establishing sugar centrals. About this time, a group of prominent Kapampangans gathered at the home of Gov. Honorio Ventura in San Fernando to form an organization that would partner with this American group. They included Jose L. de Leon, Manuel Urquico, Jose P. Henson, Serafin Lazatin, Aproniano Reyes, Godofredo Rodriguez, Tomas Consunji, Dr. Francisco Liongson, Honorio Ventura, Francisco Hizon, Marcelo Tiglao, Tomas Lazatin, Andres Eusebio, Jose F. Ganzon and Augusto Gonzalez. The organization was formally incorporated in 16 January 1918 as the Pampanga Sugar Development Company PASUDECO) with Jose L. de Leon as president, Augusto Gonzalez as treasurer, Tomas Consunji as secretary, and Manuel Urquico and Francisco Hizon as members of the board."

4 Jasa bridges to be completed this 2013
Wednesday, January 23, 2013

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - Officials of the regional public works and highways department clarified that construction of four bridges along the western Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa) toward Subic will be completed by June this year and not in 2014 as what is contained in the billboards within the project sites.

Pampanga Chamber and Commerce and Industry Inc. executives led by president Jim Jimenez said the group has been receiving a lot of queries on the projected date of completion of the bridges in Bacolor, Sta. Rita and two in Lubao.

"We have been receiving a lot of queries as to the completion of the four bridges. They have been causing a lot of traffic and many business establishments along those portions of Jasa are getting irked because many motorists prefer to skip the area and use the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway instead. We are not so happy about the traffic like it takes about 40 minutes to get to San Fernando from Guagua," said Jimenez.

Jimenez also reiterated the chamber's request for detour and alternate route signs that may help ease the traffic conditions and avert inconveniences resulting from the construction of the four bridges.

Engr. Lorrie Malalwan said, however, that the bridges will be completed by June 2013.

"It is actually a one-contract construction package that involves other projects in the west like in Zambales which are to be completed by 2014 as stated in the project billboards. But as to the four Jasa bridges, these will actually be completed by June this year," she said.

She said the DPWH will immediate look into the proper traffic management program along west Jasa before starting with the Cabetican Bridge [Bacolor] rehabilitation this coming February.

Fernandino rescuers now ‘certified’
City of San Fernando Website

A batch of 30 members of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) from the City of San Fernando recently successfully completed a city-sponsored training on basic life support, advance cardiac life support, incident command system, and emergency medical services.

City Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez personally congratulated the trainees during their graduation rites on January 14 at the Heroes Hall.

With the goal of “zero casualty”, the graduates are now expected to respond immediately to situations and the City expects them to be always prepared for any threat of catastrophe.

The EMS personnel is sub-grouped into the San Fernando Rescue Unit (SAFRU) and are assigned as the initial responders of the city in emergency circumstances like floods, earthquakes, road accidents and relief operations.

The Emergency Medical Training is a preparation for a higher level of training and other programs for a more proficient, effective and efficient response to calls received through the City’s emergency hotline 961-HELP (or 961-4357). (CSFP-CIO)

New pedestrian footbridge on JASA labeled ‘one of its kind’
City of San Fernando Government Website

A new pedestrian footbridge along Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA) was inaugurated in time for the City of San Fernando’s 12th City Charter Anniversary last February 4.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) considers the P19 million worth footbridge as “one-of-its-kind” in the country.

“This is one of the best footbridges that I have ever seen,” Regional Director Antonio V. Molano, Jr. said while describing the unique design of the new facility.

Completed during the administration of Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez, the project is “structurally durable and well-made because heavy duty materials were used in the construction of this modern infrastructure,” the DPWH official assured.
