'Ground Zero Mosque' Developer Beefs Up Jean Nouvel Condos

Wednesday, March 11, 2015
Hana R. Alberts

Quote:
Once-controversial Soho Properties chief Sharif El-Gamal just announced that he has tapped a minimalist Italian designer, Piero Lissoni, to design the apartment interiors and amenity spaces at his new condo building, set to rise at 45 Park Place between Church and West Broadway.

The building, which is going to be 39 stories tall (or 665 feet) and contain 46 condos, already has an all-star design team in place, with starchitect Jean Nouvel tapped, along with Michel Abboud's SOMA Architects. Early renderings showed a many-headed glass tower, but the final design is yet to be unveiled. Next door, at 51 Park Place—once the planned site of El-Gamal's controversial "Ground Zero mosque"—there will be an Islamic cultural center and museum.

Demo on this is just about done, small remnants of the ground floor's all that's left.

Dang.

The original render looked pretty interesting. This one looks kinda like every other tower in NYC and the borough's.

Its a good way to preserve existing structures too. Lots of cantilevers when it comes to the 300 foot and below category. A few midrises also utilize cantilevers out in Queens. More space, without damaging or touching other towers if engineered right.

Above ground demo is done. Didn't go directly by the site, but this seems to be chugging along.

The site of a SOMA Architects-designed Tribeca skyscraper has finally been cleared, signalling that groundwork and construction of the slender 38-story tower may soon be before us. The 12,000-square-foot lot at 45 Park Place owned by El Gamal’s SoHo Properties, was formerly by three battered pre-war buildings, two of which were a downtown outpost of Burlington Coat Factory.

The upcoming as-of-right project will total approximately 135,000 gross square feet and contain 50 condominiums, a public plaza, and a museum designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. A 2010 iteration of the project involving an Islamic cultural center became encircled in controversy due its proximity the World Trade Center site. But now with legal hurdles cleared, the site fully assembled, and city approvals in place, the glass and steel skyscraper is poised to move forward.

What original design? Doesn't look like much, if anything, has changed.
