Select US Airports by Nonstop Routes 5,000+ Air Miles

As I was saying in another thread, researching this made me realize just how isolated California is....so far from literally every major foreign city.

LAX, SFO and JFK have the most 5,000+ mile nonstop flights, at least as far as I have found by looking at Wiki and then looking up air mile distances on Google. If you find more accurate info, please share.

Tons of observations made during this research. Here are some...
Honolulu-Boston is the longest domestic flight in the US, I think.
Honolulu has the only nonstop US flight to Malaysia, Other airports have the sole US flight places too but I found this interesting.
Ethiopian Airlines uses Lome, Togo as a place to refuel flights to Addis Ababa, so those flights dont count.
Singapore Airlines uses Manchester to refuel flights to/from Houston so that doesnt count, although I think they are planning a nonstop, which would be one of the longest.
Los Angeles has multiple carriers serving places you might not think--3 carriers serve LAX to Chengdu. Who knew?

I'll add more later...

This didn't pass the smell test for me since surely Chicago to Warsaw is slightly farther than IAD to Warsaw. And indeed it is, but both are under 5000 miles (not to mention, according to Flight Connections, there is currently no flight between IAD and WAW).

Also missing from Chicago, according to Flight Connections (did not verify this independently!):

Osaka (ANA, but only one flight a week and seasonal), 6489 miles
Hyderabad (Air India, also just one flight a week, 8249 miles).
Athens (AA, 5446 miles)

Don't currently see flights to Chengdu (but maybe they exist sometimes!).

Thanks for the insights.

I used the 'Airlines and Destinations' section from the Wiki page of each airport.

I remember Chicago had a Hyderabad flight but didnt see it here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27...tional_Airport

With respect to Warsaw, I goofed. That has to be mileage to another city, I will look. Thanks for catching it!

Not really. LAX and SFO along with New York and Atlanta are at the edge of the continent which make them ideal for international connections. Likewise for Houston and Miami for travel to Latin America.

California actually doesn't have that much of a location advantage over the eastern U.S. for flying to Asia. The distance from NYC Hong Kong is only 800 miles farther than the distance from L.A. to Hong Kong.

Disagreed. The numbers show that California has significantly shorter flights to Asia than do East Coast cities--to take your example of New York to Hong Kong versus Los Angeles to Hong Kong, I absolutely consider a flight that is 811 miles shorter to be significant and advantageous.

But then there's California's other major international hub: San Francisco is 1,155 miles closer to Hong Kong. Similarly, San Francisco is 1,087 miles closer to Singapore and 1,601 miles closer to Tokyo than is New York.

Using the great circle, yeah, it's crazy how cities that you think aren't that close, really are.

Here's another, basically a wash.
NYC to Buenos Aires 5,200 miles
LA to Buenos Aires 6,000 miles

LA to Tokyo is about the same distance as LA to Berlin.

The airline schedules don't really support you here. Planes also do not necessarily fly the shortest distance between two points. Trans-ocean flights are routed through designated navigational routes, and these routes can change depending on weather and wind conditions at altitude. It's actually fairly interesting, I'll link a video explaining the North Atlantic Tracks below.

JFK-HKG has a block time of 16:00 hrs
ORD-HKG has a block time of 15:55 hrs
LAX-HKG has a block time of 15:55 hrs
SFO-HKG has a block time of 15:05 hrs

To say California has a significant advantage is a bit of a stretch. Plus when you're actually on one of these flights, whether its 16 hours or 15 hours it's a long fucking time either way.

For comparison, the airline block times for Atlantic flights are significantly different.

JFK-FRA comes in around 7:30
ORD-FRA around 8:20
SFO-FRA around 10:50
LAX-FRA around 10:50 as well

I say around because there's multiple flights with different block times. Different types of planes also fly at different speeds. 747s are the fastest and A330s are among the slowest widebody aircraft. The differences aren't huge but 25mph faster adds up over a 15 hour flight.

As I mentioned, New York is also at the edge of the continent which is why most airlines connect via JFK, EWR (ugh) and LGA for flights to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

East Coast gets you to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia faster than the West Coast. East Coast is a longer journey than the West Coast to the Asia Pacific/Australia.

Every thing Else is a wash.

In terms of access to population, East Coast wins. You Can fly JFK to London in 6 hours (done it many times with good tail wind); and also fly JFK to LAX in 6 hours.

In terms of access, east coast is highly preferable. There’s no debate on this.

The only international flights from LaGuardia are to Canada and the Caribbean.

as a counter example, ORD is nowhere near the edge of the continent, but still has non-stop flights to 22 different cities in europe.

that certainly is fewer european destinations than the two big NYC airports, but there is still a lot of europe-bound air traffic from the US that is not routed through JFK/EWR.

One fun fact-- as of a few years ago, Portland was the smallest US airport with nonstop flights to both Europe and Asia.

And apparently only flights from the Bahamas in the Caribbean. LaGuardia doesn't have U.S. Customs facilities, so all international flights have to be from origins with U.S. Customs preclearance. Apparently, only the Bahamas and Canada have preclearance facilities within the 1,500 mile range of LGA.

True but ORD is at the northern edge of the lower 48. I think DTW and MSP to a lesser extent still serve as major hubs for Delta. If I couldn't fly direct from IAH, I would connect through ORD all day before I would with EWR. I would even swim.

No, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax all had non-stop flight from LaGuardia. Of course, these have been halted with the closure of the border with Canada.
