A couple examples in Kansas City:

The old Union Bus Terminal and Pickwick Hotel, which finally has plans for renovation into apartments with ground floor retail.

Also, the old Katz Pharmacy building in Westport designed by Clarence Kivett.

I was really captivated by one clock tower in Denver.

I was walking 16th street and noticed a clock tower that had rooms in the tower but none of them looked big enough to be offices and it really caught my attention. So, I went inside this clock tower and a sign in the lobby said that it was actually a former department store and the owner added the clock tower with small rooms in it so it could be the tallest building in Denver, which it was for many decades. So the tallest building in Denver was a department store for a long time.

...there was also a sign saying there was a gentlemens club downstairs.

agreed. it's one of the finest city halls in the nation in my opinion.

fun fact: milwaukee city hall was the tallest building in the nation when it was completed in 1895 (but was soon superseded by NYC's park row building). that's right, for a brief window of time in the late 19th century, little old milwaukee was home to the nation's tallest building.

Not counting the Washington Monument, completed in 1884 and more than 200 feet taller. Probably also not counting some cathedrals.

It's the CN Tower debate all over again.

yeah, i guess i should have qualified my statement with tallest occupied building. then again, milwaukee's city hall isn't "occupied" all the way to its top. the washington monument was considerably taller at the time, and illinois' state capitol (completed 1888) is 8 ft. taller than milwaukee's city hall going by roof height. the SSP database isn't returning any other structures in the country that were taller than milwaukee's city hall at the time of its completion in 1895.

lots of hair-splitting, so let's just say that milwaukee's city hall was either the tallest, 2nd tallest, or 3rd tallest building in the nation when completed in 1895, depending on some definitions and qualifications.

if i'm not mistaken, this was the largest four-face clock in the world at one time.

milwaukee's full of little surprises like that.

There's also the Walker Center, which isn't a clock, but forecasts the weather depending on the color of the lights on top:

This is Austin's University of Texas Tower - 307 feet - 29 floors - 1937. It's the tallest steel skyscraper in Austin since all the other major buildings here (with the exception of the Capitol dome) are concrete skeletal frame. It was designed by Paul Phillipe Cret of Philadelphia, and bares striking resemblance to Camden, New Jersey's city hall which was built 6 years earlier. I gotta wonder if Cret took inspiration from that building's design for the UT Tower.

Milwaukee City Hall:

source: http://jpcullen.blogspot.com/2010/11...-national.html

The high quality of craftsmanship and the intricate details to the Milwaukee City Hall always impressed me. Whenever I was in Milwaukee on business, I wanted to see this building. This building is a true masterpiece.

The Bromo Seltzer Tower in Baltimore which has a photo posted of it on page 1, is another unique clocktower. It's a timeless treasure for the city.
