Total lunar eclipse photos from Tuesday morning

There was a total lunar eclipse that was visible in North America on Tuesday morning. So I stayed up lastnight to watch the lunar eclipse and even got some photos. I emailed one of these to KTBC Fox7 here in Austin and it was on the news all day today during their broadcasts. They even showed it full screen on the news tonight putting it ahead of a couple of photos their station's producer took. I was proud. I hadn't realized an eclipse was soon to happen, and had they not mentioned it, I wouldn't have known to go check it out. This is the first lunar eclipse I've seen in 3 years, the last was in October of 2004 while I was in Florida.

The moon at the start of the eclipse at about 4 am. It had already started here of course.

The one that was on the news today:

It really was beautiful. I lucked out because about an hour after I took these a blanket of clouds came over Austin that obstructed the view.

After this my battery died. I recharged it for more shots, but the clouds rolled in.

Groovy. I didn't even know there was one happening. I remember watching the 2004 one in Edmonton which was pretty cool, but no photos.

Good shots, thanks. It was too cloudy to see the eclipse in my neck of the woods.

It started at 3:51 am and lasted until 7:24 am (central standard time). It started getting cloudy around 6, so I missed the rest.

Thanks Kevin. Astronomy is one of my passions, and I was up at 4:00 to watch the Moon disappear into the Earth's shadow. The reason the shadow is red and not black is due to the refracting (light-bending) effect of our atmosphere. In essence, the Moon is still lit by all the sunsets and sunrises on Earth.
While I was watching the Moon, I also observed a few other astronomical objects, including the twinkling Pleiades, the Andromeda Galaxy, and Mars against the Hyades cluster all through binoculars as well as crescent Venus through my small telescope as it rose in the early dawn.
There will be another total lunar eclipse visible from the Americas on February 21, 2008, the third in less than a year. A good website for checking out the latest in astronomy and observing highlights is www.skyandtelescope.com.

Astronomy is a way to transcend this Earth and realize that our solar system is a miniscule part in a infinitely vast universe.

I woke up at 3:00 am to see since it suppose to start at 3:5? I think, but was way to cloudy. I was a bit disappointed.
