Milling Wood at Clipper Mills (Wood-Mizer)

This is the raw lumber ready to be sent through the Wood-Mizer.

Loading up the lumber.

The process starts by cutting one side so that it's flat and can be used as a stright edge al the log is rotated around. Cutting 1 ¼” strips of lumber from the log is the goal.

Squaring up an edge.

Square

This is where the wood will dry out for a year and by this time next year be ready to be
used as the floor or else where.

Wood Mizer is a pretty nifty machine. It's self-contained and portable with minimum setup, so you just take the sawmill to the logs instead of loading up the logs and hauling them to the mill.

It does an accurate job, and the narrow kerf from the thin saw minimizes waste. They're pretty impressive machines to see at work.

Here's the old-fashioned way of doing it; a circular saw about five feet in diameter ...

Powered by a steam engine ...

Fired with coal and/or scrap wood.

Thanks Rob, it is a nifty machine and it's not as loud as I expected it to be.
Thanks for those great shots above, I really don't know anything about this
stuff but after helping out and watching the process, I have more respect for those who do it.
