hkskyline's 2017 in Marrakesh, Morocco

Continuing my rediscovery of a forgotten photo set from my 2017 adventures in Morocco, I have heard a lot about Marrakesh, being a caravan town where merchants from across West Africa came to trade their wares. I had high expectations, and ended up visiting the souq and main square twice during my short visit. Well, it is chaotic all right, and I didn't feel very safe wandering the side streets and narrow alleys amidst the constant staring that didn't seem very friendly to begin with.

Nevertheless, my camera got a good work out, although I wished I could see a snake charmer that is so famous here.

Except for Jason Bourne or James Bond, they don’t stroll, they are always running.

Great photos, thank you for posting. My wife and I visited Marrakesh in 2011 and I found it to be a fascinating, exotic, city but I agree, it is chaotic (perhaps too chaotic for my wife). We didn't have any real issues with safety but there was a soccer riot one evening when we were eating dinner in the public square. Also, we took a tour of a tannery one afternoon and we were the only westerners on most of the streets. We definitely weren't in Bethesda any more.

You mean that all the French going on vacation out there are Jason Bourne? Are you kidding me?

I'd rather shut my mouth as I kinda know about the Moroccan regime...
They'd have to bother deleting one of my posts again.

Leaving the souq area, a short walk away is Koutoubia Mosque, which dates from the 12th century and is named after the booksellers that line its base. Its minaret design has inspired other structures in Seville and Rabat.

The city walls are visible in many places with a noticeably pink hue.

The elaborately-decorated Saadian Tombs are busy with tourists. Saadian Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour ed-Dahbi used Italian marble and pure gold to create a magnificent mausoleum. Chancellors and wives are also buried here, but in garden plots outside the chambers.

Browsing the local markets is one of my favourite activities when I travel. Supermarkets are no exception. I wanted to check out the local specialties and hope to score a good deal.

My first stop was to find argan butter, a delicious topping for my breakfast toast.

There is plenty of cheese, and prices even for familiar brands are much cheaper than back home.

Bordering on the Atlantic, canned fish was also in plenty supply. One can can cost as little as 50 cents USD.
