I've been looking forward to visiting this city for a long time now, but now that I have, i'm having some mixed feelings. While the city does have great potential and is in the process of building a skyline to rival that of Warsaw, along with many great Danube waterfront projects, the city itself didn't give off the feeling of ... a capital city of Slovakia. I'm sure its a silly comparison, but I was far more impressed with Ljubljana (Slovenia's capital) than Bratislava. There's a lot of missing infrastructure, many of the city's buildings are in need of immediate restoration. And the often heard statement that Bratislava is, along with Prague, one of the richest/highest standard regions of Eastern Europe simply doesn't drink water for me anymore.
But judge for yourself. Here are my photos from April, taken during my tour of Eastern Europe.
This photo thread is hardly representative of historical Bratislava, which is quite lovely. What is shown here is pretty much the Bratislava that was built during the days of communism. Yes, much of it is run-down and in need of some TLC.
Here is a link to my Webshots page if you would like to see some of the more quaint parts of the city. The Webshots page also contains pics from other parts of Slovakia as well, so you will have to jump to page 19 to see the Bratislava stuff (there are also some Bratislava pics starting on page 2).

Sure, but it's a much more realistic representation of the actual Bratislava that people live in. One might argue that this is still nicer then reality, since he didn't even show the commi-block shitholes that permeate a huge chunk of the city outside of the core.
Of course this a problem in most easter-european cities, where the downtown cores are starting to look really amazing, but there just isn't enough money to rebuild the outer areas where a large chunk of the population lives. All in due time hopefully...
