The whole mall caps a huge underground parking garage for the capitol complex buildings.

That's such a strange scene. Like, I know there used to be a street there at one time. I could have sworn I crossed it a few times. It's especially odd seeing the museum there with the hole next to it. It's like, yes, yes, the museum looks normal, but what the deuce is that hole doing there?

With Phase I of the N. Austin campus expansion wrapping up, the Texas Facilities Commission is in the process of starting Phase ll. From today's AULCC updates:

I'm not expecting those to be very tall. If they're the same floor to floor height as the first building, then they should be 86 and 104 feet tall then.

That's ok. It will be interesting to see an area thick with low to midrisers like many blocks in Washington DC. They won't be too exciting architecturally but the area will look pretty cool imo.

I like how each of the three phases is pretty much the same office building and adjacent parking garage.

They should turn those garages into gameday parking with shuttles to and from the stadium.

This new Parking Garage District is going to be so hype.

Yes, structured parking > giant surface lots. And the new campus is a big improvement over the state's old style of huge setbacks, weird orientation, and giant lawns. But damn, look at the gigantic double structure parking garage (with setbacks like a mini waterfront overlay) at the main HHSC campus across Lamar and then consider they're adding three new garages at the new campus.

They can always take down the old original buildings and add like 3 more huge parking garages and two buildings. I feel this place needs alot more parking. It needs to SCREAM parking garages.

It's worth driving by the completed first phase to get a sense of it. It's not that tall in comparison to DT but it's the tallest thing around, and really looms over Guad.

i'm actually really glad they're moving on to the next phase so quickly -- the density (for that area) will be pretty impressive.

Though . . . yeah, the whole complex will have like 5500 parking spots (!!) when it's done.

Are they planning on redeveloping the State Hospital area at any point? I thought I remembered reading something on that subject a while back. Could have been someone just expressing a desire for that, of course...

It's already begun. The new warehouse structure is pretty conspicuous near Lamar and 44th St. The new hospital building will be just south of that. The project is listed as 8% complete on this website that may or may not get updated regularly:

https://hhs.texas.gov/about-hhs/proc...ospital-system

Note this is just for the hospital redevelopment itself, most of the other areas will remain untouched for a long time. UT/Dell had that vision document a while ago with lots of secondary development that will probably never come to pass. You might be remembering that. The actual new hospital building is about as unimaginative and uninspiring as you might expect. The contrast between the state's treatment of this campus versus the HHSC campus less than a mile away is striking.

Looks like another tower crane is going in at the north end of the Texas Mall

Nice, thanks for the update. I think I was remembering the Dell Medical School option. Just below the 8% update, it has photos of a warehouse on site that are from September 2020, so it has at least been updated within the past month.
