Couple of photos of Hamilton bridges courtesy of the local rag.

The Skyway Bridge, carrying the QEW over the shipping channel into Hamilton Harbour. It's officially known as the "Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway Bridge"... there's a long story over that lengthy moniker. The Toronto-bound lanes cross the 1958 span with the steel arch, the Niagara-bound ones on a concrete 1985 bridge just behind.

The pedestrian and cycling bridge over the QEW and Red Hill Creek, southeast of the Skyway. This connects the trails of the Red Hill Valley with those along the lakefront.

The other bridge over the water on route to Hamilton Harbour is my favourite of those in the area. The Burlington Lift Bridge I've only gone fishing there from the pier twice. Got stuck for a cargo ship and saw a few pleasure craft pass under including a sail boat that looked like it was on a collision course for it but turned around last second. Always cool to watch it go up and down. Alarm is annoying as hell though.

Sometimes the bridge's lifted "too early" so cars just turn around. By examining the the ramps to and from QEW on both sides, one can deduce that QEW used to go through that bridge.

The ramps are much newer. The road and rail bridges over the channel have a history that can't be guessed. The Skyway was built to alleviate the lift and swing bridges and had a toll up until the early 1970s. It was originally 2 lanes each way... now with the twin they're 4 each.

That lift bridge was originally two lanes, with railroad tracks along side them. The bed of those tracks is now paved walking/cycling trail on either side of the channel, and there are 4 lanes for cars on the bridge structure

MTO plans to eventually widen the newer 1980's era portion of the bridge too to bring HOV lanes across it. No idea when that will happen though.

They are just wrapping up a pretty heavy, ~5 year long rehabilitation of the original 1958 structure.

I think the reason the ramps are setup that way is to allow the QEW to be diverted if the skyway needs to be closed due to high winds or an accident.

This is true. Eastport Drive (a 4-lane "service road" on the west flank of the QEW) was built when the 1985 bridge was being constructed. While it serves the industrial land that exists and is still being created in the east harbour, it allowed for easier on/off on the Hamilton side of the ship channel. Prior to that it was just the QEW and Beach Boulevard along the east side of the highway, which is a residential street.

In summer of 2014 a dump truck with its bucket raised hit the metal structure of the older bridge. Luckily there was no catastrophic damage, and the bridge was only closed over a long weekend, but the traffic congestion mess that ensued was horrible. Other crashes often close one of the bridges, but only for hours not days... still causes quite a backup on other local roads (through Burlington and Hamilton too, as people try to take the long way around the bay to get back on track)

Eventually there will probably be need for a third span if traffic growth on the QEW continues post-COVID at the rate it was before the pandemic. Shoehorning it in will not be simple, but perhaps it could help alleviate the non-wind closure issue if vehicles can be diverted onto the unaffected bridges.

Lift bridge over the channel into Hamilton Harbour, opened 1962 (the fifth of its ilk; there were swing bridges there in the past for road and rail). Behind it are the original Skyway Bridge (1958) and its concrete twin (1985).

Le pont Savoyard in two short videos.
A lovely covered bridge over the Gatineau in Grand-Remous, Quebec. Close to highway 117 (a trans Canada highway), it is really worth a little detour.

will the ice bridge be retained? I enjoyed biking and rollerblading over that structure.

The St. Lawrence is very wide at the Champlain Bridge (vs. J-C and Mercier bridges)

I've always liked this one, Seal Island Bridge on the outskirts of Sydney, Cape Breton:
