5 could have looked a lot better I think. The lighting is dark, and I would have found the pic more interesting if it had been sharper. Still an interesting photo though. I look at it and wonder how/if cars can squeeze through.

i really don't get how 1 has so many votes; is it even an aerial, or just taken from another mountain?

and i like 9, but it's not an aerial, it's from the arch?

I couldn't understand why it had so many votes either, but this would explain it.

These photo contests aren't always about picture quality. If you're putting your photo out there for the public to vote on, you have to accept what the general public likes. #5 isn't a great photograph. But people are drawn to it and so they've voted in favor of it. Knowing this might help us all in our own selections going forward.

I for one voted for #6 because I think it captured the subject best, includes "skyscrapers," and is clearly well shot. But sometimes it's a poorly shot and poorly lit image that captures our attentions and can turn out to be regarded as some of the best photography in the world.

I think they're all amazing and wish I had entered!

I certainly hope the Vancouver photo entered in this contest (which you advertised in another thread) was not your photo. If so, what you did was really inappropriate. I do not talk about my photo EVER in one of these contests, although I might speak about another photo (whether good or not so good). I certainly don't go posting in another part of this forum (or in other forums) about these contests, and certainly not when I am a participant. It doesn't pass the smell test.

I was wondering how photo #1 (which is a nice enough photo) was in a distant fourth place and suddenly acquired a lot of votes and zoomed up to second place. Now I understand why...

73 votes is probably a record for a photocontest as well.

I'm hopeful the contests don't turn into a uber-regionalism charlie foxtrot. When they do, I will no longer be running them. Touraccuracy didn't say vote Vancouver and I don't think they meant it that way either.

That is the view you get when landing at YVR. I have shot a pic that is almost identical to his, which it looks like I should have entered.

As in most photo contests, even with purists, there is a balance to be weighed between all the elements of photography, such as interest of subject, wow factor, composition, as well as technical qualities.

A controversial choice will do that This was a good contest in that it polarized different sides on what thewy view as a good picture. Good quality vs a good subject; there's no argument that photo 5 was the least quality picture from a technical standpoint, but as a subject it was far more interesting than the rest. It was the only one that I spent alot of time looking at.

As far as Touraccuray's post, I wasn't meaning to imply that Touraccuracy got people to vote for that one picture. I was just pointing out the reason the picture got so many votes all of a sudden.

@LSyd: i know it wasn't a real aerial, but i entered it because we were a little thin on entries and i think it illustrated a different viewpoint/perspective on how our brains perceive things (in this category)

@Rocket1964: i didn't think it was that good. i did it the old fashioned way, manually overdubbing a guassian blur multiple times away from a chosen focal point (all processing done in gimp)
