Uhh no. Just completely false.

But even besides traditional gambling, have you ever heard of this thing called the stock market?

BS. Many people gamble. I'd say that smart people know their limits better. But to say "smart people don't gamble" shows how out of touch you are. I'll gamble here and there but it's small amounts of money I'm OK with losing as long as I don't do it often and I take it for entertainment purposes.

Stop with your self importantance and listen.

Average SP500 returns over the last 50 years is just under 10%. Investing in an indexed ETF (boglehead style) is not gambling in the long term. Maxing out your 401K, backdoor ROTH IRA, tax loss harvesting, etc. are pro moves. Stocks are on sale now, personally investing as much as possible now.

Casinos exist to make money and all of the games understandably are stacked against players. Even if you can count cards, you're still at a disadvantage (and can get kicked out).

Yes rich people gamble for fun with disposable income. My concern is those that don't have disposable income or understand the concept of saving and/or delayed gratification. I see it all the time at my Jewel's scratch off section (1 block from the casino). There's a reason the lottery is called the 'idiot tax'.

Watched the meeting online and some of my building friends went in person. It went as expected, profits are most important, no 3rd party traffic studies, claimed crime 'halo', etc.

I park 1 block away and our lot (one of the ones they listed) is quite full. With an unreserved spot I can see this being a major issue. Selling my car soon anyways, but I would be upset otherwise.

Also very surprising that they expected just 10% of people to walk/bike. There's lots of density in that area, 1K people in my building alone and we would all walk.

Curious on how they will geofence rideshares. Would there be an extra charge for me because I live a block away? Luckily I almost exclusively bike/CTA everywhere, but most of my friends do not.

Crime will be nonexistent inside the casino and on the sidewalks it borders due to high security; however, what about 2 blocks away when the drunks stumble out at 6AM (as it's 24/7)? Time will tell, but based on the limited police presence/funding now I do not expect great results.

The casino has a profit incentive to keep the area safe, I wouldn't be surprised if its security had a visible presence even two blocks away.

If they estimated a higher percentage, then River North neighbors would complain that they're underestimating car/taxi traffic since they love to nitpick the traffic studies. The engineers are simply being overly conservative. If a greater percentage arrive on foot or by CTA, then that's just a pleasant surprise.

There shouldn't be an extra charge unless the city passes a law for some reason. The only thing is that the apps might default to the casino's pickup area instead of getting picked up at your front door. But the apps should let you drag your pin to a new location.

C'mon, this concern about crime is overblown. Most people leaving the casino are poorer than when they walked in. If you're concerned about muggings, the servers and bartenders leaving the many bars/restaurants are a far better target because of their cash tips. I agree there is a crime issue, but I don't think the casino will have much effect.

Meh. Yes there will be some disruptions, but the beauty is that it's temporary. I live a block away and I couldn't image not paying for a reserved, secure parking spot. There's plenty of those available in our building for around $200 a month. Expecting to always find non-reserved spaces in a public garage is a gamble I wouldn't be willing to take (not to mention the threat of break-ins and dings). If roughly $7 a day to store your vehicle in the heart of River North is too much for some people, folks should either reconsider car ownership or pick a different neighborhood.

- All the parking seems to have been shifted underground ()

- 2,500 underground parking spots, and 700 temporary surface parking ()

- Renderings for the placeholder buildings have improved

Very excited to see this city get a mini casino district. The city needs more 24 hour/late night options that aren't just clubs/bars. Plus all underground parking is great. Not expecting all those towers to come into fruition, one can hope tho

I'd love to see a pulled out view of this image with Halsted Point, 700 W. Chicago and the Salvation Army proposal plopped in... We're talking at least 25 towers...

So who would be doing the residential development? Is that Bally's or controlled by Bally's? Or does that remain to be granted to some developer?

I was also confused to see the statement that Chicago would own 40% of the casino... anyone one what that means in practice?

Interesting at the meeting to hear the the owner of WaterSaver Faucet Co. at 701 W. Erie say that he can not see his business remain now that the PMD is lifted and the casino/River District plan is moving forward. Shame to see businesses "forced" out (unless guy was being overly dramatic), but I assume that parcel is ripe for yet another rental mid/high-rise.

this was covered in a Crain's interview about the "changing river west neighborhood" where the owner cited a specific issue with his existing loading zone on Erie St conflicting with the design of the casino complex. I dont recall the specific details. They also just completed a huge expansion and renovation of the facility.

Hopefully they build it in a way to accommodate and coexist with Watersaver.

I believe the 40% ownership is based on the share of revenue/profits that the city gets. This is a promised revenue stream for police/fire pensions. I think the city initially set an even greater fee arrangement and asked for RFPs but didn't get any interest
Considering the share of profits the city gets, and infrastructure and amenity upgrades it seems like a good deal. I'd be curious who is on the hook for maintenance of the public components, though. We often don't think about that when we get these big influxes of capital for new and shiny things.

Ugh. Getting worse and worse. They have deleted the street connection at Erie to appease WaterSaver. Seriously, screw that guy, he doesn't own a city street - if he can't load trucks inside his own property, he shouldn't be there in the first place. Not to mention that he took millions of dollars from the city to expand his business, now he acting like an entitled jerk when the city asks for his cooperation in developing the area.

The proposed replacement connection at Huron is worse - no traffic signal at Huron and it leads into a quiet residential area west of Halsted. They have deleted the pedestrian bridge over the river. No firm commitments from the city to add bus or bike lanes anywhere.

About the only good change is that they deleted the above-grade parking garage on Chicago Ave and doing temporary surface lots on some of the highrise sites instead. This was a key concern of the city's Design Committee, so I'm glad they did it. After the casino is up and running and everyone realizes they are wildly over-parked, the temp lots can be ripped up and highrises built. If they had built a huge looming parking garage, it would remain there for decades.
