Fantastic! Now were looking about four hundred and lame. This project as a whole is still pivotal for the southside so I will hold a little enthusiasm, but for the love of God, please no more! At this rate well end up with twin 250 footers

Figured I'd post these even though they are pre-reduction. From what I saw, the 40-ish story version looks fairly similar anyway.

That looks great. I wish our Fairmont was going to look like that.

Sam, the arena will be significantly taller than the sunken version in all important respects. The canopy at the edge will be much higher up, with taller glass walls meeting the street. The overall height of the building is lower because the "swell" of the roof has been reduced considerably, minimizing Pelli's biggest design move while allowing less natural light into the interior. Possibly there were some cost savings here, but it sounds like more of a sop to the PDNA folks in making the overall height lower.

I'm very disappointed in this design - conceptually, we went from the Barclays Center, which works very well in its urban site with its semi-sunken design, to the Allstate Arena, which is ringed by ugly sets of fire doors and service spaces like loading docks.

Yup. This thing is a massive disappointment. No idea how they fucked up the bid so badly.

Considering the rash of design changes (for the worse), I thought it would be a good time to share one of the other competition entries.

I hate McPier.

This whole thing is a joke. I recommend we dethread this and just discuss it in the general highrises thread. Yet another blown opportunity for Chicago.

And that entire design would have been above grade and likely cheaper than the Pelli design. Of course McPier is probably under the impression that square buildings are always cheaper to build than irregular buildings, but they are too stupid to realize that digging an enormous pit is also incredibly expensive...

Meh, I rarely go to this neighborhood, and neither does most of Chicago (unless the auto show or some other trade show is going on), so congrats to filling and renovating the existing dilapidated buildings and vacant surface lots with a building and arena The overall design is still pretty similar. Only us nerds will ever know what differences there could have been.

Not your comment. The Grimshaw design. Ugh. I'm so over this project.

There's absolutely no disputing this whole project being a continual source of design disappointment ever since the first renderings were released - it's gone one-way, and that's downhill - architecturally - ever since.

That being stated, I completely see and agree with what I think is JMT's point - from a neighborhood regeneration, activity and economic boost standpoint - the project is overall still going to be a strong positive for the greater near south and south loop, and especially motor row areas. Still, that of course does not excuse the enormous missed design opportunity.........

And, agree with TUP - I also hate McPier!!

I completely agree with Sam's sentiments here. All I can say is "at least it's not beige... yet..."

So don't post the Ronan proposal?

But let's also keep in mind that all of these versions would have likely been reoriented and VE'd, so who knows what we'd end up with.

I dunno, that Ronan one looks pretty affordable. Reminds me of this. Doesn't look like an arena, though.

Let's also keep in mind that these two unselected designs placed a large highrise at the north end of the site, which was unacceptable for the luddites at PDNA. The original Pelli proposal loaded the highrises to the south as much as possible.

Seriously? My god what a blown opportunity. The only reason I even care about this project anymore is because of the shot in the arm it will give to Motor Row. Other than that, its been depressing spiral downward. I can't wait to see the next down-cycled rendering of the hotel tower after the VE scalpel has done its work.
