I dug around a bit, but nothing other than the restaurants and the laundry came up--nothing to match the PAxxxxxOR in the pic.

I don't have a copy of the two volume book about Pacific Electric substations, [now out of print] so I can't confirm where or if, but is in the architectural style used by LAP for the depot at Santa MOnica, and Playa Del Rey and others
Service was abandoned 1940
Thanks Ed I only knew of the line that ran down Hermosa Ave, and Catalina a little more to the west of the building...I didn't think to go back further (LAP).

Thanks for your help Michael.

So you're saying the street car was probably in this area, right?

Thanks HH, that helps a lot.

I don't have copies of Ira Swett's books on LAP and LA&R at hand, but I do have copies of the two-volume work on PE substations that Ed referred to. Closest ex-LAP sub was Hermosa (west side of Hermosa Ave. just north of 27th St.).

The closest ex-LA&R substation was at Belvidere, in the general area of 190th St. & Hawthorne Blvd. The substation book (by John Heller and Jim Walker) reprints a 1904 article from Street Railway Journal which states that this substation provided power all the way into Redondo Beach.

Hope that helps.

Hanstad's Liquor Store and Hanstad's "Schnitzelbank" Cafe at 2501 and 2503 Pasadena Avenue.

ebay

Here's how the Hanstad building looks today. (left) The roofline makes me think it might date back to the 1910s or 1920s.

I'm certain we've visited the impressive building at far right---------->

It's looking good these days isn't it.

-I couldn't find the earlier post(s) on this bldg. (if I remember correctly, there's a performance arts space inside)

Cafe Gala on the Sunset Strip has been briefly mentioned before. Some matchbooks of the club are seen in this post, #21198.

There are several sources that reference the place and some of the entertainers who played there like Bobby Short, Robert Clary and Dorothy Dandridge, as well as many of it's famous clientele.

Hollywood Places

I have found a bit of information about the Sunset location.

It used to be a Spanish style residence before John Walsh turned it into the Cafe Gala in September of 1941. He sold it to Jimmy Dolan in 1948 and it was open well into the 1950's. By 1957 it was the Har-Omar and featured something exotic called "Cuisine Fantasia." By 1969 it was a Russian-Armenian restaurant called Kavkaz. It became Spago's in 1982, made famous by Wolfgang Puck and agent Swifty Lazar's annual Oscar parties. Spago's decided to move to Beverly Hills in 2001 and, as far as I know, the space has been vacant ever since.

I've been searching for some photos of the location as Cafe Gala or subsequent incarnations.
I managed to find one of the spot when it was Kavkaz and the photo is dated 1973.

Hollywood Photographs

I was watching a youtube video about Los Angeles in the 40's this week and one segment, like many do, was talking about
the nightclubs of Hollywood and they had a small montage of neon signs, mostly from places on Sunset Blvd. and, lo and
behold, there was one for the Cafe Gala.

Screencap from this youtube segment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a5WxgysHO4

I am pretty sure the bottom right number that you see "87.9" is the address for the club which is 8795 Sunset Blvd.
(The screen cuts the last number "5" off, although I don't know why there's a dot in it.)

My guess would be 6th Street a tad farther west beyond Boylston nearing St Paul. Just my guess. (I've changed 'my guess' a couple of times but now after really looking at the topography this is my final answer.)

As most of you know, my knowledge of the old transit lines is severely limited so forgive me if this a stupid question.

Did the S line run one way on 6th Street and the other way on 7th Street?
_______________

update:I see there are two parallel tracks in the vintage photo so this (6th one way, 7th the other way) probably isn't the case.

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse here. I'm just trying to figure out what is in the photograph that resembles a miniature golf course.

detail

If only I could see a golf club in that man's hand. -then I would know for sure. (that it was a miniature golf course)

Mystery Location #1: South end of Lamar St. LATL 525 is mis-signed for the A Line, which didn't run there, and for Georgia St. Car House. I suspect a fantrip, where such shenanigans often happened as part of the fun. Lamar St. actually was a branch of the O Line (N. Main St., which can be seen in the distance) and was operated during shift changes at the SP shops, which are behind the photographer. Many employees there lived in Lincoln Heights.

Mystery Location #2: Looking eastward on Temple St. at Edgeware Rd.

As Mr. Huntington has already said, mystery location number 1 is Lamar.

I'm still wondering about this possible miniature golf area, too, from a post about ten days ago!

BifRayRock, these photos are fascinating to me. That triangle area at Sunset and Crescent Heights looks so large. Lots of greenery and it even looks like a residence might be located there. I've only seen that area previously as Pandora's Box and billboards with no vegetation. (Of course, it was redesigned and mostly eliminated.)

And what is that at the left of the photo, across the other side of the Crescent Heights road veering east onto Sunset? Is it a park or perhaps a miniature golf course? Never seen that before.

It's a bit difficult to tell for sure, but there might be a miniature golf course behind the street car
Using this 1948 aerial image, I've drawn a line from City Hall past the Alta Vista to try and figure out the streetcar's location.
The only place that looks possible to me is the stretch of W 5th Street between Fremont and Beaudry. I've outlined the area next to it in red.
Scroll right --------------->

Historic Aerials

As you can see in this 1952 view, the area is now under the Harbor Freeway.

Historic Aerials

The area was still open when this circa 1929 image was taken.

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

None of my research turned up any trace of a miniature gold course .

Oh yeah, I remember Lorendoc's Lamar Street post. It's one of the best posts on all of NLA!
