What? The rest of the building is just as bad as the crown.

About who's to blame discussion from the previous page... I think that the public is to blame for bad architecture. Clients are choosing architects based on their customer's preferences, and most architecture firms do the type of work that keeps their businesses afloat.

Although I think there is blame for the architects as well because I think a lot of architects treat the work they do as their job, not as something that's important beyond that. They do their work on time and on budget, the client is happy enough with it, and they get paid and that's as far as it goes.

BTW, as I mentioned on SSC, Lakeview's Perchance boutique will open a second location next to Elysian's courtyard (the lowrise portion) on State and Walton.

I don't think this is as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I just wish we could get something, anything built in Detroit... even if it isn't spectacular.

Albeit lackluster, the tower actually has good proportions/dimensions...

I would look to see that horrid material used for the mansard replaced with photovoltaic panels.

The bottom portion of the tower is fine, and sometimes beautiful. The top is what got messed up.

I characterize this as a McMansion on high-rises.

It's definitely not a bad building, but from certain angles the top is bad. This pic from page 91 of this thread proves it.

This building would be, in my opinion, beautiful without that clunky roof and those messy balconies, why are the materials used on them so dark? Makes the building look visually cluttered.

After seeing all the "Drama" about this building, all I have to say is "GOOD TRY"

Really I WISH more modern companies tried to pull off this historical feel that it does. SURE the top looks like rubbish and was done as a rush job, but the rest of it from the neck down is quite pleasing to the eye.

The balconies, well, if they weren't so DARK they would be better as well, the dark color makes them stand out far too much from the rest.
That said, again, the over all feel is quite pleasing.

Imagine if someone tried this with an Art Deco form? Or another attempt at neo classical?

I would love to see, especially in Arizona here, a revival of turn of the century building styles.

It's too hot in Arizona. I know many old buildings in Phoenix but the marble, or limestone seems to ware out, AND there's huge electrical costs to maintain buildiings like this in CA, AZ, NM, etc. so that's why more buildings are built like the UOF Stadium.

I agree - the top is very bad. BTW, that is my pic; please credit it properly, or at least cite my username. Thanks.

I think that's a pretty good characterization.

You know I had not considered that, but given the slightly "tacky" look to it, I would say it is a fair description! If they had put more effort and care itno it, it would have looked Amazing! As it is, it seems a half-assed job.

Also, Fancy seeign you here Jason. One of the best SC historical 3D modelers of all time
