This will really compliment the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings with that third spire. Great looking building.

I think this is my favorite supertall going up in the US right now. This one and 53W53 are really some of the best supertalls that have gone up in long time.

Man...this building feels like an instant classic.

And I never thought the Chrysler could look so small before.

Looking at the Yimby update as the crown is put into place, surprisingly a lot of hate for One Vanderbilt... decrying its base, its assymetrical top, just about everything... one even says it covers up all the interesting architecture with its height. Maybe I don't know good architecture when I see it... certainly don't have the in depth knowledge many here have. Yet I think, even with its flaws, overall a damned great piece of modern New York that years from now will be considered an icon of the 21st century New York skyline. But what do I know!

Only bad thing about it is the 100-foot height cut...

Chrysler is actually fairly small; easily dwarfed by the Empire State Building but it's far away too notice. Not only in height but in bulk and shear mass. This new building is probably roughly same size as ESB but a bit taller.

It has a similar and grandiose impact on the skyline too when viewed from a far. The 21st Century ESB. The ESB may appear slightly slender when viewed from the wrong angle (typically East/West at a line of sight of 180 degrees), but certain angles, its bulky. 1 Vandy on the other hand, when viewed from any perspective, if we think of the viewpoint encompassing 360 degrees away from the tower a far, as a frame of reference or pivot point, looks bulky all the time.

It really is. It wasn't really all that apparent how small it was until the bigger towers in Midtown started getting built. That and the SSP poster side by sides. I'm looking at my New York one now that I have, and it's kind of surprising how short the crown of Chrysler really is. Psychologically, you always think a supertall will appear taller. Without the spire, I think the roof is only about 900 feet. That used to be big in New York, but not anymore. I still think it's the finest skyscraper in the world though. There just isn't another like it.

Chrysler has always been in the second tier, despite its iconic status on the skyline. And you really can see the difference between the ESB when viewing the skyline. But to this day, many people still don't know the difference. One Vanderbilt being so close, there will be no mistaking the bigger tower. The only question is what will rise between them. The Grand Hyatt development demands all eyes be kept on it.

Anyway, when the early drawings and renderings for this tower were presented, I didn't like the top, at all. I thought it was too awkward looking, and surely the placeholder would be redesigned with a different look. That didn't happen. It increased in height, and then was reduced from that, but the overall design remained the same. And eventually it grew on me enough that I actually liked it. And now, seeing it built, I can proudly say that I love it! This is how you top a new tower in New York if you want to be one of the "special" towers that people know and love, even if they don't know the name or exact height. I walked by earlier, and very few people seemed to be aware of the significance of the final pieces on the ground being put in their new home, 1,400 ft above the sidewalks.

Still not topped out when I took these photos. But here's an extended look at this great day in the history of the city's skyscrapers.

So is this the whole spire?

I'm seriously disappointed if it is.

I mean, it was small all along...I know that; but somehow I was expecting a minor curevall/tweak throughout the design process.

EDIT: Looking at the many renders online, my hunch seems incorrect; but my sentiments remain.
