10,000 Years of Roofs Over Our Heads, What is your Favourite??

-High Rise
-Tenement/Apartment Block
-Terraced/ Row House/ Townhouse
-Detached/Suburban Housing
-Anything else (I know im missing loads!)

I've lived in all throughout my live

Currently living in Edinburgh, a city where over 40% of the population l(about 200,000 people including me) live in a tenement and has a culture that highly endorses the "Tenement Way of Life". I'm not sure how much they vary from American style Tenements as those seen on the East Coast but it a typical layout is a main door with a main stair of mainly 4 stories, but especially the much older ones can reach 12, with 2 or 3 flats on each floor and a communal garden. Most built mid-late 19th century.

Good Points
-creates a close (block) spirit among neighbours
-Exquisite detailing
-huge ceiling heights and rooms space
-Dense living with sufficient space
-communal gardens

Bad Points
-noise from above
-STAIRS!!

I personally believe that, at least in Edinburgh, of all the housing types in the city, by far the most economical, reliable and in most cases architecturally beautiful is the traditional tenement and are much more relevant in the 21st century than most crappy housing blocks being put up today. Remember New York in the late 19C used Scotland as a precurser to its signature housing.

Oh will a good architect design a modern day tenement...

What your favourite type of housing???

Hard pressed to give an answer. Lived in a rowhouse in Brooklyn and an renting one now in Philly. Housing-wise, it beats my suburban Jersey home. However, I also had a great time in Soviet-style commieblocks, which, contrary to the stereotype that stems from low income projects failures, worked out as great and very liveable places, creating environments more urban than most places in America.
