Good idea for a thread... great pics throughout, especially that aerial of cowtown.

For Vancouver I would have to say from the North or South, East and West Never really did it for me. West the skyline is too spread and the concrete of the west end makes it look like Sao Paulo and East the skyline jsut looks too small.

From the North you get the skyline bunched and angled perfectly to look its most impressive and it has the bank towers at the forefront giving much more of a sense of a corporate skyline and not just residential towers. From the South is a completly different feel, as you get the condo towers of Yaletown and the West End with the tips of the taller towers poking through. In this view however you get the mountain backdrop which really differentiates it from any skyline in the world, more than making up for the overwhelming condos... making it probably my favourite view.

If you really want to get specific the view from Mt. Pleasant is probably the best becuase it gets more of the commercial towers and still has the bulk of the condos and a great view of the mountains and ocean.

That's quite a change.
Yep it's been a remarkable transformation. Pretty much everything (that stands out) south of the Tower has been built in the past 4 years. Let's just hope these (bolded) projects get off the ground.

Great shots everyone!
Vancouver - I like the view from North Vancouver with an orange sky behind.
Calgary - I Love the way the skyline is expanding southward - makes it not so skinny N-S - view from the north is still the best IMO.
Toronto - I have to agree it looks best from the tower, possibly because you don't have CN throwing off the massive scale of the other towers.
Montreal - I really like that view from the water with Mt. Royal behind (rather than the often seen reverse, which is also great).
Winnipeg - Good to see a crane visible, I like the view that spreads out the skyline with the P&M cluster to the right.
Hamilton - Nice views of Steeltown
Edmonton - needs to represent - looks great from the south but probably best from the east looking west with the setting sun behind.

Nice thread

Sorry it's so wide. There are two more highrises to the left, they were cut off. Just slabs, anyway. There
are also a few slabs and elevators behind that hill in the northeast end. The slab on the left there is our
tallest building, but the photo only shows the top half of it, and completely obscures Port Arthur's downtown.
Downtown Fort William is on the right, in the foreground area of the power plant (grey and orange building).

From this angle, if the photo is smaller and not as clear, the elevators look like an impressive skyline.
This is the best location to take a photo of the city. Unlike the Mount McKay lookout (out of frame to
the right), you're closer to the middle of the city, and lower down, so you can make out the buildings
a little better. Mount McKay is too high up and too far from Port Arthur to see "everything". In the past
few years, more houses have been built in the general area. I can see them from my apartment; if I had
a telescope, I could see into them; that's how high up and unobstructed the view is in that area.
I can actually just barely make out my building in that photo.

The other cool thing about this view is that it shows off the geography. You can clearly see the Sleeping
Giant, Pie Island and the Nor'Westers and that Fort William is in a valley.

Calgary's absolute best view, and I'm surprised no one has a pic of it up, is from the ridge on the west side of the city. Basically the view you get when you're up at the highest point of Sarcee Trail. You're easily 100m (more like 150 I think) from downtown, so you get a bit of an "aerial shot" feel. And you see *everything*. The downtown looks freaking huge and it feels just so much more than just a few tall buildings fighting for who's tallest.

I don't even know if I've seen a picture that truly does it justice. It's one of the things I show every visitor, and every single one is blown away by the view.

IMO, Winnipeg looks best from the Holiday Inn on Pembina - the towers in Osborne Village really help anchor the skyline from that angle.

Another good one is from the bridge on Lagimodiere (a bit south of Regent) - it's one of the few angles of Portage and Main where none of the 3 tallest buildings are overlapping each other in any way...

Don't have any pictures of those 2 angles personally, maybe some fellow Peggers can help me out here...

Halifax is undoubtedly best viewed from the east (Dartmouth) but there are some other angles I like;

From Purdy's Tower II:

From Fairview:

thx... and I'm glad that Josh still has the large version of that Pano, because I lost that a while ago in a hard disk crash.

As for my fav angle of Calgary, I really like the views from just east of Deerfoot Trail,

or from Memorial Drive as you head west past the Zoo.

Traynor's renderings of past, present and future Toronto using interchange42's photo from around St. Clair is one of my favourite angles of Toronto. It's one of the few from which you can see almost the entire depth of the skyline (not minding that the entire CityPlace skyline is cutoff to the right of this photo):

So here we go... I backed up time to circa 2000. I had to remove a lot of buildings and then fake and fill in all the missing parts of the extant buildings. I even had to completely draw some buildings like City Hall. So don't look too close.

First that skyline view circa 2000:

Next the present day:

And finally the render circa 2015:
