hkskyline's 2022 in BRISTOL, England

Bristol's historic centre still retains many old buildings that remind us it was once a major port for the transatlantic trade. However, the cargo wasn't always so glamorous. With Britain gaining more control of the Caribbean islands, there was a need to send workers over to the sugar and tobacco plantations owned by the city's bourgeoisie. In the late 17th century, Bristol ships started to engage in slave trading, and by the late 1730s, Bristol was Britain's top slaving port.

Very interesting. My first thought was 'Wow, Bristol, the town that made a lot of money from slave trading.'

I guess I never really saw pictures of Bristol; it somehow looks more ornate than I thought it would be. I guess if it made a lot of money from slave trading, it would indeed have some ornate buildings.

A short walk across the river from the historic centre and facing the once busy harbour on top of a red cliff that gives the church its name, St. Mary Redcliffe Church is a Gothic masterpiece whose history dates back some 800 years. Construction of the structure we see today started at the end of the 13th century with the tall spire added in the late 19th.

Born in Bristol in 1974, Banksy has created a number of street art works that have put the city into spotlight. I caught sight of a few interesting street art pieces as I wandered the streets although I wasn't sure whether these are Banksy works. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time during my short visit for a dedicated walking tour.

As I approached the river, I noticed a lot of restaurants along King Street. This area was marsh in the 17th century.

Opened in 1766, the Old Vic is the country's oldest working theatre. It was established by wealthy locals who made their fortunes from the African slave trade.

The timber-framed Llandoger Trow stands out architecturally. It was once favoured by seafarers, where they got their dose of ale and cider since 1664.

On another note, ever since I looked at this thread, I've been haunted by ads for a plastic surgery clinic in Bristol. I really appreciate that the Internet is always looking out for me like that.

Old is gold. Those buildings are so beautiful. When seeking for Best online casinos with Amazon gift cards, I came across this website https://casinosanalyzer.com/online-c...azon-gift-card. I can now find a slew of reputable websites where I can play online casino games, and many of them accept the Amazon Amazon Card.

Clifton Suspension Bridge is an iconic piece of architecture across the Avon Gorge. Designed by a young 24-year old engineer, construction started in 1836 and finished in 1864. At the time, it served horse-drawn carriages and foot traffic but now some 12,000 cars a day use it.

I like to visit a local history museum when I am in a new city to better get to know the place. M-Shed is Bristol's version of a city museum, showcasing its importance in trade, slavery connections, and residents' stories.

During the 18th century, Britain dominated the transatlantic slave trade. Over 12 million Africans were believed to have been sent to the New World between 1501 and 1866, with an estimated 2 million dying during the journey. British landowners in Virginia and the West Indies benefited from cheap labour to produce sugar, rum, tobacco, cotton, and more.

Admission is free but staff there will find good reasons to convince you to donate something.

Fry's was a local company that operated from 1728 to 2011. In 1847, it produced the first mass-produced chocolate bar, and used colour-printed labels in their advertising, an innovative method at the time. Through time, they were absorbed into Birmingham's Cadbury Brothers and Fry's name disappeared.

Bristol Cathedral's history dates back to the 12th century and is a prime example of a hall church, where the nave, chapels, and choir are all the same height.

Research revealed out of about 1000 people who are buried or have a memorial here between 1670 and 1900, some 20% had a connection to the transatlantic slave trade. The cathedral is pondering how to deal with this history, such as hosting a permanent exhibition about its links to the slave trade or removing monuments of those connected to it.
