To me, it's the pine trees that look weird! I always thought the palmetto palms in the state park outside of Luling looked more natural than the pine trees in Bastrop.

That is true although I feel like I've seen more palms like this in SA than in Austin. But then again, I haven't really had the urge to look for them until now lol.

If one is looking for them, there are quite a few. I have around 20 of five different species in my yard.

What I find interesting is how they increase in frequency as you travel South on I-35. There are some, but not many in Dallas, mainly at hotels and Tex-Mex restaurants. There is in increase in Waco and an even greater increase in Austin. But they get noticeably more common around San Marcos and into San Antonio.

My parents occasionally talk about the winter of 85 wiping out a whole lot of palms in Austin. I remember the snow that winter better than I can remember the snow of 83. There has definitely been a big increase in palms over the past 20-25 years. I love my Texas Sable Palm, it's huge, it is the cold hardiest of the 2 native species, the other being the Palmetto, and can live as far north as Dallas.

Our neighborhood had a lot of Mexican fan palms back in the day. Supposedly, every house had one in the yard, but yeah, a lot of them did freeze. We have one in our yard that was planted when the house was built, so it's probably close to 60 years old. The house next door has two of them in the yard, and there's a house at the top of the street with one also. My mom also bought a Mexican fan palm for my dad's 40th birthday. That one now is close to 15 feet tall. The big one out front is about 25 feet tall. They're hardy even with snow and ice, but anything down around 5F to 10F is really pushing it. Our smaller one took several months to come back fully after we bottomed out around 5F a few years back.

That's the one I noticed going up Sunday on the DKR webcam. I was wondering what it was for.

I remember this one being mentioned before. It also got a small bump in height, though, we don't actually know the height yet. But it's gone from 7 to 9 floors.

I'm not expecting to be a high rise, but I guess it's possible. The 7 floor version is 77 feet according to Towers.net.

Towers article:
https://austin.towers.net/at-la-vist...lyn@towers.net

Elevations of the 9-story version - but no heights.

Wow so those folks that bought on that end of the Tyndall will now have a view of this building instead of downtown? Yikes I assume when they signed they were told this was coming?
