It says Telephone Main 395....does that mean the address is also 395 Main Street?

I just saw an item on ebay that's a bit concerning.

It's a pair of magnificent bookends from the Los Angeles Public Library.

They're signed on the bottom by the artist.

The seller is asking $2,250.000

So how did someone end up with these bookends?

Here's the link to the item on ebay

Unfortunately, Dolores does not "remain at 11407 Santa Monica Blvd". It's gone to join the Olds Rocket in our sense of place in the sky:

"RARE ANTIQUE PEWTER SPINX"

LOL, I dunno e_r, how do we know they're "antique"? (Legally for something to be antique it has to be at least 100 years old). To me they look like a corporate/donor reward or memento from when the Library was restored/expanded (or maybe just an LAPL gift shop item). In any case, they're not a very graceful take on the stern serenity of the Lee Lawrie originals (and one's missing its book while the other has a chip in its headdress).

But if these guys turn up on eBay, let me know:

Dunno. Here's all I can find in the Los Angeles Times about the Schlitz Buffet, article much condensed by my mad Photoshop skilz:

Detail from above. Intersection of W 6th and Olive on center-left margin below. It's not much of an image, but 555 S Hope looks to be the southern half of a two-story, side-by-side duplex numbered 553/555:

№ 555, and it's twin, № 553, fell the same year as the photo, 1924. By then (and probably long before) the pair were called an "apartment house" as stated on the demo permit posted by HossC.

I'm pretty sure I've seen another photo looking north from W 6th & S Hope with the Normal School still in place, but I can't find it right now.

The 1914 CD lists the Schlitz Buffet at 537 S Main Street, so Main 395 must be the phone number.

You're correct T2, they were either given or made available for sale to folk to donated either time or money to the library's restoration. I saw a few of them in people's offices back in my ARCO days.

I see that I'm not the only NLAer looking for pictures of 555 S Hope Street. Above, t2 showed us the 1910 Baist map. Here, I've marked 555 on the 1921 Baist map.

www.historicmapworks.com

Depite its proximity to both the Normal School, and later the Bible Institute, 555 seems to be camera shy. I found two or three images of the area where it was just feet out of shot.
The best I've come up with so far is this circa 1916 view of the rear. Comparing with the map above, I believe I've arrowed the right building.
NB. I had to merge two photos from the set to get this view.

Just curious, what was the source of the smoke coming from all those chimneys on all those buildings?

Here's a school from Julius Shulman. It's "Job 2221: Thornton Montaigne Abell, Braddock Drive School, 1956".

By the size of his turn-ups, the boy on the right has plenty of room to grow into those pants.

I assume that this is an outdoor eating area.

The grown-up outfits of some of these kids made me think they were older until I zoomed in.

I hope the girl on the left kept her lunchbox - see below.

The last photo shows a small auditorium.

All from Getty Research Institute

The school is now known as Braddock Drive Elementary School, and can still be found at 4711 Inglewood Boulevard in Culver City.

Finally, here's a 1955 Annie Oakley and Tagg lunchbox like the one being held by the girl in the fifth picture. This one, complete with matching Thermos, is currently on eBay for $159.99.

Isn't it cool to see through two windows at the same time ? I don't remember many noirish examples of that.

I asked Christine Romero over at the Central Library Store about the bookends
.
Here's her reply:

"These items were from a campaign called Save the Books.
They would have been produced sometime between 1987 and 1993.
They weren’t sold by The Library Store,
so I don’t have any other information on them."

I think ARCO is where I've seen them before too.

Anyway, not precious e_r, so don't worry about them.

From the front 553-555 S Olive appears to be a two-story frame building. The one indicated in the photo is a four-story brick effort which seems to be a wing of the building facing on W 6th (?)

Compare it to the Baist map I posted. I originally thought it would be the building to the left, but the surrounding houses suggest the one I arrowed. See where 555 is relative to the Rosegrove Hotel.

More Fort Hill homes

Although Milo Baker is listed at the SW [sic?] corner of Fort and Rock in the 1888 city directory, maybe the Baker
home was being built when the 1888 photo was taken? Otherwise, I think we'd see it, as we do below at center.
The 1888 photo seems to show that the pointy-towered Baker carriage house, to the left of the home, was built
first (I've marked the three buildings from the other photo with their same color):

LAPL 00061421 previously posted by me
The Wills home is at the upper right of this enlargement from an 1888 photo looking west over the plaza toward Fort Hill.
To the left of the Wills home is Milo S. Baker's home under construction at the SE corner of Fort and Rock Streets (later
Broadway and Fort Moore Place):

UCLA/Islandora ("Gated entrance to the plaza, Los Angeles, 1883" [sic])

Also, from far left we see the Andrew Glassell home (round balconies, single tower flanked by chimnies) at 42 (later 352)
Buena Vista, then 44/356 Buena Vista (with the north-facing balconies), and 46-48/362-64 Buena Vista (double hats).

Here's the full photo:

The south side of the Glassell home is near the upper left corner of this enlargement from a c. 1900-02 (?) view
looking north from the court house. The other two Buena Vista homes mentioned above are partially visible to
the north of the Glassell home. A bit of the Plaza and the Pico House can be seen below the upper right corner:

The Glassell home was one of four projects on Fort Hill by architect C. H. Brown listed in the August 24, 1886, Los Angeles Times:

Here's the T-intersection where Grandview meets Coeur D'Alene.

From street level it's difficult to see what's on the northeast corner.

Does anyone know what's behind this hedge?

But there's a hitch, the street numbers on Granview at Coeur D'Alene are in the 2600s (nowhere near 906 )

Any help would be appreciated folks.
