Convention center eyed for Queens

By CARL CAMPANILE
June 20, 2011

Quote:
Move over, Javits Center. A convention complex could be coming to Queens, right next to the soon-to-open slots casino at Aqueduct Race Track, The Post has learned.

Gaming giant Genting, operator of Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct, is considering building a facility after its casino is completed, sources said.

"They want a convention center to rival Javits," said state Sen. Joe Adabbo

New York breeding gets boost as Aqueduct casino nears

By Glenye Cain Oakford
7/21/2011

Quote:
After 10 years of false starts, political maneuvering, and frustrating delays, the Aqueduct casino finally is heading for an October opening. Located within 10 miles of 5.6 million people, the ontrack casino’s planned 5,000 video lottery terminals and other gaming machines could funnel about $40 million in extra purse money and $6 million in breeders’ funds to New York’s Thoroughbred industry.

Playing the Odds to Land a Job

By MATT FLEGENHEIMER
July 12, 2011

Quote:
In a flagging economy, competition for jobs at the city’s first casino is fierce: With 1,150 permanent positions available, the casino, at the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens, has received more than 10,000 applications to date, according to its president, Michael Speller. More than 70 percent have come from Queens residents, he said, focusing on fields that include marketing, security and gambling. The construction created an additional 1,300 temporary jobs, the company said.

The 1,150 permanent jobs represent almost a 50 percent increase from original targets of around 800.

How is there this much land to build this huge casino in Queens? What was on the site previously? Is it a former landfill, or former neighborhood?

It's being built at Aqueduct Racetrack, which covers a lot of ground, most of it parking.

You get a better idea from the image below from www.rwnewyork.com

Yeah, the majority of Aqueduct Racetrack was just parking lot. The subway station was long dilapidated and the expansive space was only being used for flea markets, which, don't get me wrong, I personally like.

I'm wondering (since they've taken down the racetrack's seats) if they'll still host horse races at the new casino, though?

The flea market was "evicted" and horse racing will continue.

Last week, members of the press were given a tour of the gutted-out grandstand at Aqueduct, which is scheduled to hold a multilevel, 415,000-square-foot casino – Resorts World Casino New York.

The two-floor casino will offer more than 4,500 video lottery terminals (slot machines), and will have an additional third floor for conferences, concerts – and possibly in the future, space for table games, which are currently not allowed by law in New York.

Instead, the casino will offer ETGs – Electronic Table Games – in their place. “If there’s an opportunity for table games down the road, we’d be very happy to be a part of it,” said Michael Speller, president of Genting New York. “Tax revenues are escaping to nearby states.”

The first floor will include a full-circle bar, enclosing a 28-foot stage, with a 16- by-30 foot high-definition screen above it. The floor also will include a sevenoutlet food court, two buffets and 2,500 Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs).

Stage two of the construction, which is expected to be completed at the end of the year, will include another 2,000 VLTs and two signature restaurants – RW Prime, a steakhouse, and Genting Palace, a Chinese restaurant. A six-floor, 2,500-space garage is being built, along with a new enclosed crosswalk that will lead from the A-train subway station to the casino.

For the racing fan, there will be many places to view the live cards at Aqueduct, including several platforms where spectators will be able to exit the casino and look at the track.

Monitors will be available throughout the casino to watch the races, but to wager, you will have to go to the racetrack side of the building.

New York making push for more casinos

By Matt Hegarty
8/11/2011

Quote:
New York’s politicians have indicated they will push for expanded casino gambling in the state in the next legislative session, an effort that could present competition to the state’s racetrack casinos.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is the latest politician to join the call, saying at a news conference Tuesday that his administration would consider a measure to expand the state’s network of casinos, which are currently limited to Native American reservations and racetracks. Aqueduct racetrack is scheduled to open a casino by the end of October.

Most legal experts contend that any measure legalizing casinos beyond current practice would require a constitutional amendment, but Cuomo said that requirement might not apply.

Cuomo Weighs Ending State Limits on Casino Gambling

By THOMAS KAPLAN
August 9, 2011

Quote:
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, suggesting it was time for the state to “come to grips” with the proliferation of gambling in New York and neighboring states, said Tuesday that he was weighing the legalization of commercial, non-Indian casinos in New York State

The governor said his administration was “actively” investigating whether full-scale commercial gambling should be legalized in the state, a move that would quite likely draw significant public disagreement but could offer huge financial benefits for the state and be a source of upstate jobs.

“It’s really not an issue anymore of ‘Well, if we don’t officially sanction it as a government, it’s not going to happen,’ ” Mr. Cuomo said at a news conference in Albany. “It is happening.”

No. I believe its even slightly smaller than the one in Yonkers (Empire), but maybe not.

There is the ability to expand in a future phase though.

Aqueduct racino promises better times to come

By WILL SPRINGSTEAD
August 15, 2011

Quote:
Once the 4,525 VLTs and 474 electronic table games are running at Aqueduct - they will be implemented in October and December - Hayward projects that should result in a $30 million increase in purses for 2012, or 29 percent increase. Speller thinks the number could be as high as a $55 million increase.

With that, there is no doubt New York will be the most coveted state for racing year-round. It will bring more owners, horses and lead to more wagering. The breeders are hopeful it will also lead to increases in stallions, mares and farms.

"New York, in my mind, has always been the most important state in racing," Collier said. "(With the purse increases) Every top trainer will want to run at Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga. It will have the best purse structure in the world, and I mean that."

Resort at Aqueduct aims to 'wow' after October open

Quote:
For gamblers itching to take on Lady Luck, it’s only a matter of weeks before the sound of construction at the site of the city’s first casino gives way to the rattle and racket of gaming machines.

The property is scheduled to open in early October, and while it won’t have the live table games associated with lavish casinos in Las Vegas, that isn’t stopping its developers from pulling out all the stops for what will be the largest project of its kind in New York, at nearly 1.5 million square feet.

The casino’s floors are being molded into distinctly iconic spots in New York.

The main gaming floor, which will have 2,280 video lottery terminals and 205 electronic table games, is referred to as “Times Square” — complete with a glut of TV screens and eateries. Another floor is dubbed “Fifth Avenue,” and will house two fine-dining restaurants, one featuring Cantonese cuisine and the other a steakhouse and wine bar. Speller said they also hope to attract entertainment to the venue, and the third floor — called “Central Park” — will feature 130,000 square feet of event space to hold concerts and receptions.

September 01, 2011

Quote:
The initial group of what will eventually be 4,525 video lottery terminals arrived recently at Aqueduct, bringing the opening of the Resorts World Casino New York City even closer to reality.

The first phase of the racino’s opening is scheduled for October and will feature 2,280 VLTs, the Queens Courier reports. The second phase is scheduled to open later this year with an additional 2,245 VLTs. Each phase of the racino will feature entertainment and dining options.

Bettor times
Racino’s ready to roll at Big A

Get ready for Baccarat on the Belt.

Aqueduct’s new, $830 million gambling complex will offer local bettors their own virtual Vegas -- complete with big-bucks gaming tables and thousands of video slot machines -- when it opens next month.

“It’s the first casino in New York City. And it’s our showcase,” said Mike Speller, chief executive officer of Genting New York, operator of the “racino” at Aqueduct off the Belt Parkway in Ozone Park, Queens, during a press tour yesterday.

The site’s first section, called Times Square Casino, opens to the public at the end of October with 2,280 video lottery terminals for games such at Hot Rocks, Wheel of Fortune and Triple 777, not to mention plenty of ATMs.

Aqueduct's Racino abuzz with the sound of money as slots come to town

BY Irving Dejohn
September 21st 2011

Quote:
Reporters got a sneak peek of the Aqueduct facility from Resorts World New York yesterday, which is slated to open its doors to the public in late October.

The electronic gaming machines were illuminated and awaiting programing, creating a dizzying light show in anticipation of a swarm of gamblers. The ongoing construction left some of the screens with a fine layer of dust.

The initial opening, which is limited to only the first floor, will include 2,280 video lottery terminals and 219 electronic table game seats stretched over the 190,000-square-foot area. The second and third floors, which will open by the end of the year, remain mostly a skeleton filled with construction workers.

The swirling, multicolored rugs filled the expanse, adding a dizziness to the frenzy of the gaming floor, dubbed the Times Square Casino. The bright lights and sensory experience rival 42nd St.

New Aqueduct casino thumbs computerized nose at N.Y. gambling laws

Editorials
September 25th 2011

Quote:
The thorough shredding of New York's gambling laws will be on vivid display next month when the Resorts World Casino opens its doors at Aqueduct Racetrack.

You read that correctly: The operators are marketing their betting mecca as a casino. They're not passing it off as a video lottery parlor, which is how Albany sold it to New Yorkers. They're not euphemizing it as a racino.

They're proudly calling it a full-fledged gaming parlor - in a state where the Constitution supposedly bans casino gambling and only a handful of Native American-owned parlors can operate.

The gambling options lying in wait at Aqueduct go way beyond the slot machine-style games that previously popped up at Yonkers Raceway and other horse tracks around the state. The slots will be there, of course, as alluring and sophisticated as any you'd find in Vegas. But Resorts World will also offer electronic versions of Vegas-style table games, including baccarat, roulette, craps and a dice game known as sic bo.

Seeing how this facility will provide the city and state with income, perhaps a full fledged casino will pop up in the near future and NY will be the next state to legalize gambling.
