the providence metro area includes all 5 of rhode island's counties.

although it's important to point out that rhode island is about the same geographical size as cook county.

Ironically, someone form Chicago saying they're from the "The Grand North" or "Upper coast" would be just about the douchiest thing you'll ever hear. What's wrong with just the Midwest? I haven't heard of the negative connotation that some of you are talking about.

As for your question, I think that's the defining quality of the Midwest?

I've heard people in Europe say that the quality that stands out the most about the region is a sense of severe dislocation or "bodenlosigkeit" whether urban or rural. The Midwest is always in a state of upheaval, transition,and migration that's very pronounced compared to the rest of the U.S. It creates a lot of schisms and fuels the "Is this Midwest or not?" debates.

Iirc, the second largest "metro area" in Illinois is actually just the suburbs of St. Louis. I don't know where the rest of the population comes from.

Odd, I would think that much more of the west than the midwest. Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Denver, etc. have been changing so rapidly over the past 50 years, especially over the past 20, that they are basically new places. Other than the usual suspects (Detroit and maybe Cleveland) in the Midwest, which cities have had as pronounced a change as those cities? I'm not sure I've ever heard the midwest described by outsiders as "changing too much"...

Illinois has 20 counties with a population of 100k or more, and 9 of them aren't in Chicago's MSA or CSA.

Illinois has quite a number of midsize cities, but none of them have the weight to counter Chicago. The largest population area in the state outside of Chicagoland is the Metro East, which are St. Louis' Illinois suburbs. They make up about 1/4 of metro St. Louis.
