no, providence does at 100%.

the providence metro area includes all 5 of rhode island's counties.

although it's important to point out that rhode island is about the same geographical size as cook county.

super tiny states like those found in new england are kind of a different animal from normal states.

In MSA terms, all of Rhode Island is Providence but not all of Providence is Rhode Island.

anyway, I guess we can continue comparing the fine points of how Chicago's diversity rivals Los Angeles, a city that reminds everyone of an Indianapolis By the Sea.

It's actually further east than west on a map of America, but since the world "mid-east" already implies someplace far, far away, midwest is the term we are stuck with.

Other options:

Great Lakes region (for a portion of the midwest)
The Great North (again for a portion)
The Grand North
Central region
Upper coast
Middle coast

Douche-free land? The Midwest? Chicago?
LMAO
Do you actually leave your house?

I hate to ruin your image of Chicago, but I met and saw PLENTY of DOUCHEBAGS in Chicago. I saw some in Cincinnati and St. Louis.

Wow, people on this forum really love to generalize this stuff. It's like "everybody in the south is so nice".

I mean for all the flak LA gets for being fake, what's faker than a small town person who smiles in your face and talks behind your back when you leave?
Sorry, I don't buy any of it.

Ironically, someone form Chicago saying they're from the "The Grand North" or "Upper coast" would be just about the douchiest thing you'll ever hear. What's wrong with just the Midwest? I haven't heard of the negative connotation that some of you are talking about.

I'm sure it's tongue in cheek, but Urban Politican has made similar comments before.

Metro East and Central Illinois have enough weight to drag Chicagoland's share of Illinois down.

We should go back to calling it the Northwest Territory.

As for your question, I think that's the defining quality of the Midwest?

I've heard people in Europe say that the quality that stands out the most about the region is a sense of severe dislocation or "bodenlosigkeit" whether urban or rural. The Midwest is always in a state of upheaval, transition, and migration that's very pronounced compared to the rest of the U.S. It creates a lot of schisms and fuels the "Is this Midwest or not?" debates.

Iirc, the second largest "metro area" in Illinois is actually just the suburbs of St. Louis. I don't know where the rest of the population comes from.

Odd, I would think that much more of the west than the midwest. Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Denver, etc. have been changing so rapidly over the past 50 years, especially over the past 20, that they are basically new places. Other than the usual suspects (Detroit and maybe Cleveland) in the Midwest, which cities have had as pronounced a change as those cities? I'm not sure I've ever heard the midwest described by outsiders as "changing too much"...

I would imagine that this makes Las Vegas the highest percentage population of any state that is large.

Illinois has 20 counties with a population of 100k or more, and 9 of them aren't in Chicago's MSA or CSA.

Illinois has quite a number of midsize cities, but none of them have the weight to counter Chicago. The largest population area in the state outside of Chicagoland is the Metro East, which are St. Louis' Illinois suburbs. They make up about 1/4 of metro St. Louis.

Upstate is only about 6-7 million. And dropping. Downstate sans NYC is about 5 million; 3 million in LI and another couple million in Rockland/ Westchester counties. I'd say the NYC metro area (within NYS) is well over half the state population.
